Anita Elisabeth Tucker Meade, was born August 26th, 1933 to parents, Juanita Smith Tucker & Cecil A Tucker, in Christmas, Florida where her Great, Great Grandfather John R. A. Tucker founded a ranch operation in 1860.
A lifelong resident of Orange County and member of a Pioneer Florida Family in Christmas, she went to Christmas School and graduated from Orlando High School in 1951.After which, she went to the University of Florida where she was very active with the International Student Organization, and her sorority Alph Omicron Pi. She was nominated by her sisters to be a Debutante and much to her surprise, she won. During college, she took time out to teach Sunday School, and watched the Florida Gators football 'even when they weren't very good.' She graduated in 1955 with a degree in Education.
She married her husband, James Monroe Meade esq. , and her family settled in Orlando. As a dedicated mother of three, she was a Den Mother with the Cub Scouts, member of the School Board of Fern Creek Elementary, and Shenandoah Elementary School. She worked as an elementary school teacher, as well as an EMT driver. In 1988, She ran for Belle Isle City Commissioner where she lost by only 9 votes. Anita found much joy in both teaching and playing piano, she combined these passions to write children's educational material, with music for teaching elementary school students.
As a dedicated Episcopalian, she attended St. Luke's Cathedral in Orlando all of her life. She played organ for church services at St Mary of the Angels, as well as the Spanish language services at El Espiritu Sonta (Church of the Holy Spirit). This lead her to become an Ordained Eucharistic Minister through the Episcopal Diocese of Central Florida. She was a strong believer in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, of which she sent copies around the country and world in hopes of turning the tide against segregation and oppression.
She was a beloved member of the community, and a light of joy to all who came to know her.
She is survived by her son, William D. Meade, daughter, Laura Besser, and James Meade II. She has six grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren who knew and loved her as their Mema Meade.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, June 13, 2021 from 1pm-4pm at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions, East Orlando Chapel, 895 South Goldenrod Road, Orlando, Florida 32822. A funeral service will be held on Monday, June 14, 2021 at 1pm at the Christmas Cemetery, Christmas, FL
