Anthony E. Romo

June 14, 1924 — October 15, 2020

Anthony (Tony or Bibi) E. Romo, 96 years old, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 15, 2020 during his time of hospice care with Vitas Healthcare of Orlando, Florida.

Tony married his lifelong love, our mother, Vera, on June 19, 1948. Together they raised 2 beautiful girls and three handsomely healthy boys on the balmy southside of Chicago. Before retiring and moving to Orlando, Florida in 1998, Tony worked 30 + years at U. S. Steelworks in Chicago.

As a father, Tony's "tribe" was priority as demonstrated by the responsibility for a seven-member family he willingly shouldered. Together with his wife, our mother, they represented an indelible example of nurturing.

Looking back at our early years, we kids didn't fully appreciate the challenges of shift work our Dad faced working at U. S. Steelworks. Yet, while it was mom who handled all the preparations, it was dad who did the heavy lifting to facilitate our family skirmishes to many events. One of our favorite places was Calumet Park, a huge beach park right off Lake Michigan. He packed blankets, towels, sun lotion, "floaty" toys, along with plenty of food and the mandatory couple of gallons of Kool-Aid. And oh yes, he packed us kids too! Along with family, friends and food, we experienced many summers at the beach in an atmosphere of barbeque, sunscreen lotion and the sounds of children "unchained"! Somehow, dad found that extra "daddy energy" to see him through those day-long events.

There were also fishing trips (Mom REALLY LOVED fish in her bathtub), family trips to the usually crowded Riverview Amusement Park and little league sports games. Having such a full plate compelled dad to foster his own humorous quips. One familiar adage was, "Oh well, as we say in Ireland...." instantly finishing with a pun spoken in Spanish! As our father, and grandfather to his "skwinklies", Anthony E. Romo's years were full. He was a rich man!

Tony is preceded in death by his loving wife of 71 years, Elvira (Vera) Romo, his sisters, Josephine (Romo) Reyes, Margaret (Romo) Ramirez, brothers Thomas Romo, Rudolph Romo and his beloved granddaughter, Leslie (Lolly) Lee. He is survived by his sons, Tony (Mary Winters), David (Chantal) Romo, Bob (Patti) Romo and daughters Christine (Raul) Marquez and Teresa (Joe Helenek) Romo-Helenek. Additionally, he is survived by his treasured grandchildren Rich (Alina) Venegas, Melissa Romo, great and great, great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
