Armister Clay Mynes, 76, of Orlando, passed January 19. He is survived by his wife, Brenda; children, Christy Trainer of Bethlehem, PA, David Scott Cribbs and Armister Clay Mynes Jr. of Jacksonville, Jeffrey Mynes of Satsuma, Tammy Froese of Jacksonville, and Leona Mynes of Melbourne; brother, Robert Mynes of Palm Coast; sister, Juanita McManamay of Newport, NC; brother, Johnny Ray Elam of Raeford NC; 14 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his father, Bernard Clay Mynes of Detroit, and mother, Leona Adkins Elam of Sprague, West Virginia.
Clay was born and raised in West Virginia, where he attended church, played baseball and caused mischief. He joined the Navy in 1961. He married Charlotte Johnson in 1962, with whom he had five children. He served aboard USS CORONADO, USS INDEPENDENCE, USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT, and USS FORRESTAL during the Vietnam conflict. He taught Enlisted Recruiting Orientation in Orlando, and served as firefighter, career counselor, or recruiter in Cecil Field; Seattle; Lisbon, Maine; Norfolk, Virginia, and Keflavik, Iceland. He married Brenda Shelton in 1980. After retiring in 1982, Clay and Brenda made Orlando their home, and had one child.
Clay loved being around his family and friends, joking and laughing. He had a loving personality. He enjoyed teasing his sister, joking with his children, and taking care of everyone. He touched the lives of everyone he met and is deeply loved and missed by many. Visitation will be held from 12PM-2PM, Thursday, January 25 at Newcomer East Orlando Chapel. Funeral services with military honors will begin at 2PM. Interment will take place at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery.
