Augusto "Oggie" Mercado
Augusto Gatmaitan Mercado passed peacefully in Orlando, Florida and joined our Creator on Wednesday, February 9, 2022, at the age of 70 years old. He was born on August 18, 1951 in Manila, Philippines. He was the eldest child of the late Toribio Mercado (of Batangas, Philippines) and the late Milagros Gatmaitan (of Bulacan, Philippines).
Augusto or "Oggie" was married to his soulmate and the love of his life Thelma Tolentino for almost 5 decades and their happy marriage was blessed with six loving children.
All his life Oggie strived to be in union with God and in joyful community with others. He loved and lived life fully and his smile and sense of fun was inspiring and infectious. He loved traveling and fellowship with everyone. He has journeyed through and made friends in his native Philippines, the USA and many countries, cities and Catholic communities in between. He was active in the Mater Dei community (Manila) and the Couples for Christ (Orlando). He was a doting father/ grandfather who frequently visited or traveled to show his love and presence for his children, in-laws, grandchildren and friends. His smiles will still be found in the hearts and minds of many whether it be in Manila or California, London or Saigon, New York or New Jersey, Batangas or Bulacan, North Carolina or Singapura, Davao or Surigao, and Tondo, Toronto or Orlando.
His positive attitude to life is best summed up in his favorite song and daily morning prayer: "Lead me Lord, lead me by the hand and let me face the rising sun".
In addition to his wife he is survived by their children, grandchildren and pets: Abigail (Ulysses) Espadero and children Jules, Caitlyn and dog Mani; Paulyn and dog Smores; Glady (Ivy) and dogs Glavy, Angel; Jay-R (Challie) and child Cross; Guccie (Curtis); Angelyn and cat Hobbs.
Oggie loved Orlando, Florida where he attended the Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church community and frequently visited the Disney/ Universal Studios, and had a special place in his heart for the Philippines and California. The Philippines is where his parents are resting, and where his beloved four siblings live: Beth, Mimot, Boyet and Benny. California is home to wife Thelma's family matriarch Emmie Tolentino, mother to Thelma and Eddie, Techie, Chona (RIP), Romel, Josie, Cecil - all of whom Oggie loved like his own siblings and family. He wanted to thank them for the many prayers, messages, emails and love he and wife Thelma received through the years. They were greatly appreciated.
