Barbara Chambers was born on September 17th, 1937, in Chicago, Illinois. She was the second of five girls born to Samuel William and Juana Bernice Hampton.
The late 50s were memorable years in Barbara's life. In 1956, she graduated from Lindblom High School in Chicago. On January 21st, 1958, she married the love of her life, Charles James Chambers. The marriage was officiated by Reverend Herbert Jones, Pastor of Hope Presbyterian Church, where Barbara and her family were active members for many years. Barbara also attended Mount Joy MB Church and The Lighthouse Church of Central Florida. Barbara and Charles had three children together.
Barbara attended college at the Chicago Teacher's College and at the Art Institute of Chicago. She was an active member of the Englewood Urban Progress Center in the early 70s, where she was instrumental in opening the doors for underprivileged youth to experience a variety of activities and classes, such as, dance, arts & crafts and numerous field trips. She was also a main worker for Operation Bread Basket, where those in need could receive a meal. Barbara was also a foster mother for a number of years. She opened her home and heart caring for children from new born to around 5 years old.
Prior to getting married, she worked at SI Jacobson in Chicago. After her husband, Charles passed in December 1981, she worked at the Developmental Institute and The Chicago Chiropractic Center for a few years. She then went on to work for the Chicago Post Office for 20 years, where she retired at the age of 70. Some of her interests included baking, cooking, dancing, bowling, crocheting, sewing and arts & crafts.
Barbara departed this life on March 15, 2020 in Sanford, Florida, where she lived for 6 years. She was 82. She is survived by three children, Barbara Ann Marie Pittman of Illinois, Victoria Elizabeth Upshire (Michael Sr) of Florida, and Charles James Chambers Jr. of Illinois, four sisters, Juana Wooldridge of Arizona, Janice Hampton-Hudson (Bernard) of California, Myrna Lovejoy (James) of Illinois, and Cynthia Hampton-Crusor Bryan of California, In-Laws,( James Bryan, Tony Pittman, and Carina Chambers), six grandchildren, Michael Jr (Zulimar), Marcus, Monique, Miara, Christiana, and Clarisse, and three great grandchildren, Mia, Meilani, and Michael III. Bonus grandchildren, Tanika, great grand, Xzavia, Aquila, Tierra, Steven, great great grand, Nevaeh, and Zion. Extended Family, The Stokes. There are a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, neighbors, and friends who loved her and lovingly referred to her as, Granny, Aunt Barbara, Aunt Doll and Ma Chambers!
Something Granny would often say, but now we say to her... "Bye-bye, Sugar Pie"!!
