Barbara Ann Overdorff

October 3, 1935 — October 19, 2019

Barbara Ann Overdorff, 84, of Orlando, Florida passed away on October 19, 2019. She was in hospice care after complications from a fall and congestive heart failure. Barbara was born in New York City, New York on October 3, 1935 to Kathleen O'Malley and George Martin.

Barbara attended the Blessed Sacrament, an all girls Catholic School. She graduated in June 1953 with honors, and moved on to attend the Pratt Institude for Advanced Secretarial Skills. She later applied these skills as she worked as an insurance and legal secretary. In 1960, Barbara and her then husband, Vincent Arnaiz, moved their family from the city to the suburbs of Plainview, Long Island for their great school system, one that would benefit Barbara's children, Denise Rusch and James Arnaiz. For the most part, Barbara raised the children alone. To hear her explain some of the events in her life, one would think it's unbelievable, but in reality, the stories are true and quite amusing. These stories all made Barbara the interesting woman she was. Her life experiences were lessons in cautionary tales, mostly told in her AA meetings, or as she referred to as "the rooms," where she made life long friends who understood her.

Barbara and her husband, Ken, moved to Orlando in 2013, to a retirement community, to be closer to her daughter, Denise, her grandchildren, and soon so be great granddaughter. The move was especially bittersweet because she lived in the Plainview home for fifty years. Barbara's son, James Arnaiz, preceded her in death, as did her husband, Kenneth Overdorff. Losing her son and husband within a few months of one another impacted Barbara's life with immense sadness.

She is survived by her daughter, Denise Rusch, and her son-in-law, Raymond Rusch; her grandchildren, Shaun Coffey, Rachel Rusch, Roxanne (Gregory) Susko, James D. Arnaiz, Alexandra B. Arnaiz; great-grandchildren, Aurora Susko and Hunter Susko.

Barbara's family has requested that any donations made in memory of Barbara be made to Advent Health Hospice Care of Central Florida, 480 Central Parkway, Altamonte Springs, Florida 32714. They provided wonderful comfort, caring, and ministry to our family and mother when we were in desperate need of understanding and support through the process.
