Barry Chalice Dirk Johnson of Orlando, Florida passed away peacefully in his home, surrounded by family and friends, on January 23, 2018, after a brave battle with cancer. Born in Norfolk, Virginia on August 20, 1957, he was 60 years old.
Barry was the son of Rear Admiral Millard J. Johnson (deceased) of Sand Gap, Kentucky, and Anita (Hann) Johnson of Newfoundland, Canada. He is also survived by his brother Shawn Johnson and sister-in-law Sharon Johnson of Winchester, Massachusetts, and their children, Natalie, Quinn and Hope; his brother Quin Johnson of Jupiter, Florida; and his sister Karla Bennett and brother-in-law James Bennett of Hershey, Pennsylvania, and their children, Owen, Sean, and Matilda. He is also survived by a large and loving extended family, and by his best friends Mike McGarry and Jim Smith.
The son of a career naval officer, Mr. Johnson moved more than 20 times during his childhood. He graduated from North Chicago Community High School in 1974 and entered The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, at 16 years old. During his junior year, Mr. Johnson transferred to Eastern Kentucky University, receiving his B.S. degree in Computer Science in 1978. He was just 20 years old when he graduated from college and he was awarded one of the first Computer Science degrees from Eastern Kentucky University.
Early in his career Mr. Johnson worked as a computer programmer and analyst at various companies including NCR, GTE Telenet, and RCA. Mr. Johnson was an expert developer in over 20 computer programming languages and wrote many computer programs during his life including his recent expertise in financial modeling. He was a lifelong learner and studied a broad range of subjects from computer science to philosophy and religion. He loved martial arts, Star Trek and Bruce Lee movies, music, walks in the neighborhood, and working on cars. He was an old-fashioned country boy who loved the rural mountains of eastern Kentucky where his father grew up. All who knew him were struck by his extraordinary intellect, his self-sacrificing nature, and his gentle soul, all wrapped up in his trademark denim overalls.
Mr. Johnson will be laid to rest in Sand Gap, Kentucky on his grandparents' farm. The family is planning a private grave-side burial service.
In lieu of flowers the Johnson family requests that well-wishers donate in Mr. Johnson's memory to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (https://www.nami.org) which is dedicated to building better lives for millions of Americans affected by mental illness.
