Berta Halpern, beloved Mom, Grammy, Great-Grammy and friend to many, passed away on December 16th, 2023 surrounded by her loved ones. Berta was born on October 9th, 1933 in Indianapolis, IN. As a young girl, she fell in love with live theater and dancing. She would often talk about going to the local dances every Friday and Saturday night. In her early twenties she became an Arthur Murray dancer, and the small-town, Midwest girl, ended up in New York City dancing on national television on the Arthur Murray Party (episodes available on YouTube). In addition to dancing, her other passion was taking care of others. When she moved to Florida, she started working at Venice Hospital as a candy striper, and ultimately went on to become a nurse. Some of her fondest memories are from that time of her life. When she was a little girl, her mother would sing to her "You Are My Sunshine", and as a nurse she would sing this to all her patients at night. They loved her. In 1967 she met the love of her life, Peter Halpern. On their first date they walked by a car dealership and saw the brand-new Pontiac Firebird that had just been released. She was amazed. Peter picked her up in it for their second date. Berta loved her family with her whole heart. She loved her husband, her kids, and her grandkids. She loved singing in the choir and she loved all her friends from Church, but most importantly, she loved the Lord. She had a simple but profound faith and she always trusted. She said all the time that "The Lord takes care of me." He did. Through the love of her children, her friends, and especially her daughter-in-law Emily, she was well taken care of.
Berta is pre-deceased by her husband, Peter Halpern; her daughter, Karen Tibbs; her daughter-in-law, Pam Halpern. She is survived by her children, George Halpern, Chris Halpern and Diane Fojt; 10 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren.
