Bertha (Griffin) McBane, age 99, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 29, 2019 in Orlando, Florida. She was born in Snow Camp, North Carolina to parents Ed and Lorraine Griffin. Bertha was the eldest of three siblings, of which all preceded her in death: Kent Griffin, Ada Lee Thompson, and Clara Stephens.
After graduating from Sylvan High School, she attended Appalachian State College in Boone, North Carolina. She was an avid athlete, not only playing on the girls' basketball team but also enjoyed softball and tennis.
Burton McBane and Bertha Griffin were married on May 28, 1940 and remined married for 71 years until his death on October 31, 2011. From this marriage, four very lively girls were brought into this world; Phila, Anne, and twins Paula and Beverly.
In the summer of 1957, Bertha and Burton moved their family to Orlando, Florida after retiring from the family's farming business. Bertha went to work with a large local construction company becoming an IBM keypunch operator until her retirement in 1977.
In 2010, Bertha moved to Adventist Care Center after suffering a stroke and remained there until her death. She had sung all her life and this didn't stop her. She worked with the minister on Sundays as their worship leader to the residents in the Center.
Bertha leaves behind her four daughters, Phila Wilfong (John); Anne Horton (Randy); Paula Cox; and Beverly Epps as well as 9 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
A public visitation will be held on Saturday, October 5, 2019 from 9:30 to 10:00 AM at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals, & Receptions - South Seminole Chapel, followed by the funeral service beginning at 10:00 AM. Interment will take place at Highland Memory Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that charitable donations be made in memory of Bertha to AdventHealth Hospice Care Central Florida (formerly Hospice of the Comforter).
