Bertha Earline O’Heron

July 3, 1933 – October 7, 2024

Bertha Earline Ormsby O’Heron, loving mother and grandmother, passed away on Monday, October 7, 2024. She was 91 years young. Earline was an independent, determined, and caring soul, with a deep love for her family and friends.

Born in Hamlet, NC, to Earl and Bertha Williams Ormsby, Earline graduated from Charlotte Memorial Hospital of Nursing in 1957 as a Registered Nurse. She joined the US Air Force Nursing Corps and moved to Mobile, AL, where she met Air Force Staff Sergeant Gordon O’Heron. Earline and Gordon married in 1959 and moved to Charleston, SC, where she continued her career as a Pediatric Nurse for the Medical University of South Carolina and later as a Civil Service Nurse for the US Naval Regional Medical Center.

In 1973, Earline transitioned to teaching, becoming a Health Science Technology Instructor at Cooper River Educational Occupation Center. She was awarded Outstanding Advisor at the National Health Occupations Students of America Leadership Conference in 1990. Her students qualified for national competitions five years in a row. She received a Commendation from the SC House of Representatives in 1992 for administering CPR to a student who collapsed at her school. She retired from Garrett Academy of Technology in 1998.

Earline was wise, thoughtful, and giving. Her favorite pastimes included crochet, reading murder mysteries, shopping for bargains, and any craft that involved a glue gun. She loved playing cards, especially Canasta, and was affectionally known as “The Vulture” for her ability to get exactly the right card at exactly the right time. She loved to share her faith by telling “The Legend of the Sand Dollar” and sharing her shells with everyone.

Surviving are her son, Alan O’Heron, her daughter, Donna and husband Gregg Cohn, and her favorite partner-in-crime, granddaughter Colleen Cohn. She was preceded in death by her husband of 26 years, Gordon O’Heron; her parents, Earl and Bertha Williams Ormsby; her infant brother William (“Billy”); her sister, Effie Ormsby; and her brother, Edward Ormsby.

The family would like to thank the staff at Cascade Heights, Oakmonte Village, Visiting Angels and Advent Health Hospice for the love and care shown to our Mom and to us.
