Calvin J. Moore

1938 - 2019

A beloved husband, devoted father, faithful friend and caring neighbor, succumbed to his battle with congestive heart failure and departed this life on Sunday June 23, 2019 at the Advent Health Hospital Rollins. He dedicated his life to the United States Navy (never seen without his Navy ballcap).

Calvin John Moore, son of the late Arthur Darrell (Moore)Meaux and Ella Boudreaux (Moore)Meaux was born on April 17, 1938 in Scott, Louisiana. As a child he ventured to Lafayette, La with his family. He attended Lafayette parish schools where he was taught the English language as French was his family's first language.

Calvin, a Vietnam veteran, joined the Navy in April 1955. He rose to the position of Senior Petty officer aboard the USS JOUETT in charge of the ships repair division, one of the few jobs held by African Americans at that time. He was also a chief ship fitter (welding and pipe fitting) in the Navy. He attended several Navy schools while serving. He traveled the world while enlisted in Navy. Notable stations were New London, Connecticut where he met and married the love of his life Martha Mae Blount. San Diego, California; Marietta, Guam; New Port, Rhode Island; New London, Connecticut; Norfolk, Virginia, and several other overseas locations. Calvin retired from a career in the Navy in May 1975 at the Recruit Training Center Orlando.

Calvin owned countless businesses after retirement from the Navy. "Sunshine Laundromat" was his first business, many memories were made at 'The Shop'. A Pawn Shop, Food Truck, Moving company, Print shop, an Appliance shop, Bail Bonding office, a Restaurant, Used Car Lot and landlord were among Calvin's entrepreneurial endeavors.

Calvin Moore nicknamed "Showdan" loved food, horses, dogs, gambling, watching the news, and talking politics. In his later years he was delighted to participate as a RAFMAN. He was a faithful member of Good Shepherd Catholic church where he served as an usher for many years.

Calvin was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Larry Lee Moore and Joseph "Alton"(Alice) Moore Sr, and a host of aunts and uncles. Calvin leaves to cherish his memory his wife Martha Mae Moore, children Dr. Mona Moore-Meaux, Arthur (Kimberly) Moore, and Alvin (Syreeta) Moore. His grandchildren Ashia (Terrell) Green, Jordan Moore, Ovey Meaux, Dillon Moore, and Alyssa Moore, and his great-grandson Mekhi Moore. Also left to cherish his memory are a host of nieces and nephews from Lafayette, Louisiana; Greenville, North Carolina and surrounding areas.
His modest ways will be forever in the hearts of the lives he touched.
