Carl Francis "Sonny" Setje's Story 1950 - 2025
Carl Francis "Sonny" Setje, 74, passed away on February 24, 2025, in Miami, Florida.
Born on December 25, 1950, in St. Louis, Missouri, Carl was the son of Carl Julian Setje and Frances K. Setje.
He spent his early childhood in Missouri and moved to Florida at age 10. He graduated from Lyman High School as part of the Class of 1968.
Carl dedicated over 36 years to his career as a commercial truck driver. He drove more than 3.1 million miles with an excellent safety record. That commitment to excellence led to him earning safe driving recognition from National Safety Transportation for more than 30 of those years.
In his personal life, Carl played a vital role in supporting his son and the Edgewater Eagle Marching band serving as the truck driver for the band’s equipment truck for eight years. He had a passion for all things trains, including being a member of the Central Florida Railroad Modelers Club. Some of his happiest moments were those he spent behind the wheel of his 2010 Ford Mustang, cruising down the turnpike with the top down, the wind whipping around him. As a gift to his wife Terri, on Mother’s Day, he would regularly take their son Carl Matthew to theme parks where they would enjoy roller coasters and other thrills together.
Carl could be slow to open up to new acquaintances, but those who knew him well saw his warmth and humor. Raised in the Lutheran faith, Carl was not affiliated with a local church at the time of his death. Carl is survived by his son, Carl Matthew Setje, and his former wife, Theresa Damelio Setje. He was predeceased by his parents, Carl Julian Setje and Frances K. Setje. May his memory be a blessing to those missing him today.
