Carol E. Avery, 79, died after a long illness January 18 in Orlando,
Florida. Born in New Britain, Connecticut, she was preceded in death
by her parents George and Eudora (Begole) Wood, her sister Doris Ann
Armstrong and her husband of 52 years Kenneth Avery.
Professor Emerita of the Department of Clothing, Textiles and
Merchandising at Florida State University, she served as department
head from 1979 to 1995. She earned her Ph.D. from the University of
Connecticut in adult, technical and higher education in 1972 after
raising her family. She completed both her bachelor's and master's
degrees in clothing, textiles and related arts from the University of
Rhode Island and taught at the university's Department of Clothing and
Textiles from 1967 to 1979
Dr. Avery had a long distinguished career as a scholar and leader in
higher education. She served as National President of Kappa Omicron
Nu, was a member of the Council for Certification of the American Home
Economics Association, and as a Fellow of the International Textile
and Apparel Association. Because of Dr. Avery's distinguished career
and long service to the College of Human Services and the Department
of Textiles and Consumer Services, a professorship was named in her
honor in 2005. Funded research included studies of hypothermia and
energy efficient clothing of the elderly in North Florida, and burn
accidents among the elderly in Rhode Island
Carol was a member and past treasurer of the United Church of Christ
in Tallahassee.
She leaves three children, Catherine of Orlando, FL; Kim of
Scottsdale, AZ and Keith and his wife Jeanne of Richmond, VA. She was
the loving grandmother of Michael and Corey of Richmond, VA; Mary Jane
Julius of Woodland Hills, CA; and Seraphina Skreiveris of Scottsdale,
AZ; and great grandmother of Neven Julius.
A private ceremony will take place in Rhode Island this summer.
