Charles Kent Powers, 79, of Longwood, died peacefully at home on Friday, October 28, 2016.
Kent dedicated his life to service and mission work locally and abroad.
Kent was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph Cunningham Powers and Dovie
Kent Powers. Kent is survived by his wife of fifty-seven years, Patricia McRae Powers;
two sons, Charles Kent, Jr. and Keith Powers; nine grandchildren, one great
granddaughter; two brothers, J. C., Jr. and Tommie Powers; and a large extended
family.
Kent was born in Umatilla and graduated from Umatilla High School and the University
of Florida, where he was a member of Alpha Gamma Rho Fraternity. He enjoyed a
career as an insurance agent for 45 years. Kent had 8 years of military service which
began in 1954 when he joined the US Navy Reserve CBs and continued with the Air
Force ROTC at the U of F. In 1957, he began over 2 years of foreign service with the
Army Security Agency, followed by several years of service in the Army Reserves.
Kent was a dedicated member of Sanlando United Methodist Church, where he sought
to serve the Lord in numerous roles. His church family has been a great blessing to him
and his family. Retirement brought new interests for him in the church where he visited
the sick and served in missions. He also enjoyed extensive travel with family and
friends. Kent was a longtime member of the Altamonte-Longwood Kiwanis club where
he served as charter president.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 5, 2016 at 11:00 AM at Sanlando UMC.
Interment will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Park, 600 S. R. 46A Lake Mary, FL 32746.
