Clara Hunkar passed away on April 8, 2016 at the age of 91 in Orlando, Florida from pneumonia. Clara was born in Budapest, Hungary on January 16, 1925 to Joseph Emody and Eva Nagy Emody.
She left Hungary for North America as the iron curtain was coming down in 1945 right after World War II. She did that alone spending a year living in Salzburg, Austria prior to making enough money for the voyage to Toronto, Canada. She lived in Toronto for a year before coming to US and being reunited with her father in New York City. She was proud to become an American. This is where she met her husband, Michael Hunkar, who moved her to Cleveland, Ohio. She was happily married for 44 years before her husband preceded her in death.
Clare was very driven and independent lady who received a Master in Agriculture Economics and spoke 5 languages. She worked in banking but her passion was outside of the work place. She loved to garden, play bridge, family gatherings and travel. She and her husband had the opportunity to travel around the world after retirement and she loved road trips. She didn't need a strict itinerary and would often pull over to stop and admire nature.
Clara is survived by her son Peter Hunkar of Lakewood, Colorado; son Paul Hunkar of Hudson, Ohio; daughter Ann Hunkar-Huie of Orlando, Florida; sister Eva Emody Vorosmarty of Bratislava, Slovak; sister Judith Emody Csernyanszky of Debrecen, Hungary, She always stressed the importance of education and was very proud that all three of her children had earned a master's degree. She was also very happy that all three were happily married. She leaves behind 6 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
Clara and her husband moved to Bainbridge in 1959 on Snyder Road when it was a dirt road. She never wanted to leave Northern Ohio but do to health issues and the Ohio winter she moved to Florida in July 2015. She missed Ohio and her friends but was happy to be near her daughter. She always talked about her book clubs, women club, senior groups and the Bainbridge Women's Club .
Clara joined St Joan of Arc Church in 1959 when it was a miss of St Rita Parrish. She sent all 3 of her children to St Joan of Arc Elementary and then to private high schools. Glimore, Notre Dame and Walsh Jesuit. She felt education was the best gift she could give her children. Which was a good thing cause she was never a great cook. She did take up cooking after she retired an like everything else she put her mind to she was an accomplished cook later in life.
A memorial church service will be held on Friday, May 27, 2016, Celebration of Life at 10:30 AM in Parish Hall with a Mass to follow at 11:30 AM at St Joan of Arc in Chagrin Falls, Ohio with a burial of her ashes to follow at Restland Cemetery in Bainbridge, Ohio. All are welcome to celebrate her life.
