Darlene (Kimmer) Peters, 79, passed away peacefully in her sleep to be with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on March 29, 2018 after a brief, but courageous battle with cancer.
Darlene was born in Albion, MI September 17, 1938 to Darwin and Lillian Kimmer. She grew up on their family farm on the outskirts of Albion where her Dad was a city fireman. She accepted Christ as her Savior at an early age. Darlene graduated from Albion High School in 1956 and from the University of Northwestern-St. Paul (Roseville, MN) in 1958.
While at Northwestern she met Doug Peters and they were married August 20, 1960. After being accepted as missionaries with Reach Beyond (formerly HCJB), they attended Spanish language school in Costa Rica and then moved to Quito, Ecuador in December 1962. Together they served with the mission, in Ecuador, until 1982, and continued to serve with Reach Beyond in Miami, FL, and Colorado Springs, CO until their retirement in 2000. In retirement they continued volunteering, completing over 50 years of serving Christ through the mission.
As a young bride, Darlene quickly learned how to live and raise a family in Ecuador without the modern conveniences that were available in the U.S. She was a loving, devoted wife and mother, who often opened their home to other missionaries and visitors from abroad. Always willing to serve where the mission most needed her, Darlene first served in the English Correspondence Department, reading mail and auditioning tapes, as well as singing in the mission's choir. She went on to fill various secretarial positions at Reach Beyond in healthcare, regional administration, and the president's staff. She also actively supported her husband in his various roles with the mission.
In 2008 Doug & Darlene moved to Oviedo, FL to live closer to their daughter's family. They became active members at CrossLife Church and made many new friends through their small group and the senior ministry.
Darlene enjoyed reading, spending time with her grandchildren, playing the piano and sewing. She was always using her talents of cooking, sewing, knitting, and cross-stitch to bless others. Many have been privileged to taste her signature apple pie. In addition to making clothes and PJ's for her children and grandchildren; over the past twelve years she sewed baby clothes, blankets, knit hats and booties, for a Christian hospital in Bangladesh; and girl's dresses for a mission in Haiti.
Darlene was preceded in death by her mother, father, brother (David) and sister (Marilyn Jean). Darlene is survived by her husband of nearly 58 years, Douglas C. Peters; her children and their spouses, David (Vicki) Peters, Deb (Rex) McCrary, and Dan (Tascha) Peters; and her eight grandchildren (Ryan, Garrett, Andrew, Olivia, Kayla, Chelsea, Zane, & Chloe); her sisters, Elizabeth (Robert) Kirby, and Ruth Ann (Tom) Potter. She will be missed by family, friends and colleagues.
The family is grateful to Deb McCrary for taking care of Darlene during her illness. Heartfelt thanks to Darlene's exceptional caregiver, Robin Berge Nokomis, and the many friends who provided support and encouragement in numerous ways. Thank you to Hospice of the Comforter for their compassionate care of Darlene through her last days.
A Celebration of Darlene's Life will be held Saturday, April 21 at 2:00 pm at:
