Darryl VerHey

November 17, 1962 — April 12, 2025

Orlando

Darryl VerHey, born on November 17, 1962, in Sheldon, Iowa, passed away on April 12, 2025, in Orlando, Florida, leaving behind a legacy marked by his remarkable career and cherished family relationships. He graduated from Lincoln Senior High School in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, as a member of the Class of 1981.

Darryl dedicated most of his professional life to the food and restaurant industry, with a noteworthy 29-year tenure at Red Lobster, where he excelled as both a server and manager. His passion for the culinary field continued as he took on the role of Catering Captain at Universal Studios, where he eventually retired. Darryl was known for his strong work ethic and was loved by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. With a character defined by his smart mouth and sarcasm, he charmed those around him, earning affection through his charisma and humorous outlook on life.

Beyond his professional achievements, Darryl took great pride in being a father, considering it one of his proudest accomplishments. He spent two decades striving for his dream home, which was recently completed with the addition of a swimming pool—an emblem of his dedication to creating lasting memories with his family. He fondly recalled a memorable trip to Florida with his children, where they rented a red Ford Mustang convertible, delighting in theme parks and adventures along International Drive.

Darryl's interests extended beyond work and family; he had a profound love for cars, trains, and Peanuts cartoons. Those who knew him recognized his talent for dancing and his keen eye for interior design, a passion that many believed could have served as his true vocation. His frugality became a lighthearted topic among friends and family, with the amusing notion that his shoes squeaked when he walked.

He is survived by his devoted mother, Martha Ver Hey; his three children, Andrea Erickson and her companion, Tanner Wehrkamp; Darryl J. Ver Hey and his wife, Vanessa; and Tyler Ver Hey and his wife, Maegan. He is also cherished by his siblings, Clifford J. Ver Hey and his wife, Marcia; Barbara J. Christopher; and Sharon J. Weisensee and her husband, Thomas; and his seven grandchildren: Noah Erickson, Joseph Ver Hey, Jude Erickson, Paityn Ver Hey, Lillian Fieber, Holly Ver Hey, and Lincoln Ver Hey.

Darryl is preceded in death by his father, Frank Ver Hey; husband, David J. Stanz; and sister, Waletta J. Derry.
