Howard David Harkey, November 9, 1949-October 28, 2021
Born in Charlotte, North Carolina, to Sarah Lou (Dickerson) Harkey and Williamson Mack Harkey, David was strong, loyal, generous, and fun loving. He hunted and fished in the wild areas of Central Florida and in North Carolina. He loved the peace and beauty of the woods and the water.
David worked as a welder and a tow truck driver, and he had a landscape maintenance business. He made friends everywhere he went, and he kept good friends lifelong. He was an excellent dancer and a knowledgeable fan of country music.
When he saw a role that needed to be filled, he stepped in and did what needed to be done. He served as an umpire when his son, David, played in Little League, and his perceptiveness and clarity of expression made him an excellent umpire. After his father's death, he was a daily companion to his mother, eating meals with her and running errands. He was generous with the gifts of his time and possessions.
He was preceded in death by his father, Mack Harkey. He is survived by his mother, Sarah Lou Harkey, his son, David Harkey, his sister, Linda Harkey, and his brother, Sam Harkey.
Memorial contributions may be made to the National Wildlife Federation.
