Donald Nygaard, 80, passed peacefully at his home on Saturday, November 2, 2013, surrounded by his family.
Don was born April 17, 1933 in Escanaba, Michigan. He lived in Michigan until a job transfer brought him and his family to Central Florida in 1982. Don retired after more than 36 years with Delta Airlines.
Don started his now famous running career at age 56. Over the years, he competed in 979 races, including 5Ks, 4-milers, 10Ks and two marathons. He was the recipient of Runner of the Year on the east and west coasts of Florida multiple times. Don was proud to say that he had run around the world!
He is survived by his son Jeff Nygaard (Martha), daughters Joy Cliett (Geoff) and Julie Nygaard (Mitch), his grandchildren and his lifelong friend and companion Verna Brandt-Miller. Don also leaves behind many friends in the Central Florida running community and at Delta Airlines.
Don was preceded in death by his wife of 48 years, Gladys Nygaard, son Alan Nygaard and granddaughter Kathryn LeNeave.
