Doris Erazo-Figueroa

Doris Erazo-Figueroa’s beautiful soul met our Lord in heaven on August 8, 2024, at age 91. Doris was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great-grandmother. She was born on April 14, 1933, in San Juan, Puerto Rico. She lived her adult life in Caguas, Puerto Rico, and spent her golden years in Orlando, Florida with her youngest daughter Sandra, her son-in-law Francisco “Paco,” and their three children, whom she helped raise. Due to her influence, they’re all bilingual and enjoy Puerto Rican food and culture. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, Francisco and Guadalupe, her sister Alicia, her brother Francisco, and her son René. She is survived by her sister Olga; her daughters Dora, Maria, and Sandra; her grandchildren, Bella, René, Jessica, Jeanette, Francisco, Luis, and Carlos; her great-grandchildren, Brandon, Bianca, Genesis, Issac, and her great-grandchild David. 

Doris loved her children and grandchildren passionately. She ensured that their every need was cared for and always wanted to give them better lives than she was afforded growing up. Doris always gave her 110% in any task. As a lunchroom cook, she would clock in early to prepare sofrito (a Puerto Rican spice blend) to use in dishes she would serve to grade school kids. The meals would turn out so delicious that teachers who usually bring their lunch would eat the meals Doris prepared for the children. She was humble, kind, polite, trustworthy, hardworking, and very independent. No challenge was too big for her. She was always willing to teach anyone who wanted to learn something from her with ample grace and patience. Her favorite book in the Bible was Psalms, and she read a verse every morning. Her hobbies included gardening, cooking, watching martial arts films, boxing fights, historical dramas, wildlife documentaries, and tennis matches (her favorite players were Nadal and Alcaraz). She loved animals, especially elephants. She would collect elephant decorations only if their trunk was raised; otherwise, she would not like them. Once, she rode on the back of an African Elephant, an experience she immensely enjoyed and remembered fondly. New Year’s and Thanksgiving will never be the same without her rice with green beans, pigeon pea rice, flan, and tembleque, a treat for many family members and friends. Her Puertorican rice pudding, of perfect texture, will be hard to recreate. Her family loved her dearly, and future generations will know the love she instilled in the lives she touched.

La hermosa alma de Doris Erazo-Figueroa se encontró con nuestro Señor en el cielo el 8 de agosto de 2024 a los 91 años de edad. Doris fue una amorosa madre, abuela, bisabuela y tatarabuela. Nació el 14 de abril de 1933 en San Juan, Puerto Rico. Vivió su vida adulta en Caguas, Puerto Rico, y pasó sus años dorados en Orlando, Florida con su hija menor Sandra, su yerno Francisco “Paco” y sus tres hijos, a quienes ayudó a criar. Debido a su influencia, todos son bilingües y disfrutan de la comida y la cultura puertorriqueña. 

Le precedieron en la muerte sus padres, Francisco y Guadalupe, su hermana Alicia, su hermano Francisco y su hijo René. Le sobreviven su hermana Olga; sus hijas Dora, María y Sandra; sus nietos, Bella, René, Jessica, Jeanette, Francisco, Luis y Carlos; sus bisnietos, Brandon, Bianca, Genesis, Issac y su bisnieto David. 

Doris amaba apasionadamente a sus hijos y nietos. Se aseguró de que se atendieran todas sus necesidades y siempre quiso brindarles una vida mejor que la que ella tuvo cuando era niña. Doris siempre dio el 110% en cualquier tarea. Como cocinera de comedor, llegaba temprano para preparar sofrito (una mezcla de especias puertorriqueñas) para usarlo en platos que servía a los niños de la escuela primaria. Las comidas resultaban tan deliciosas que los maestros que normalmente traían su almuerzo se comían las comidas que Doris preparaba para los niños. Era humilde, amable, cortés, digna de confianza, trabajadora y muy independiente. Ningún desafío era demasiado grande para ella. Siempre estuvo dispuesta a enseñar a cualquiera que quisiera aprender algo de ella con mucha gracia y paciencia. Su libro favorito de la Biblia era los Salmos y leía un versículo todas las mañanas. Sus pasatiempos incluían la jardinería, la cocina, ver películas de artes marciales, peleas de boxeo, dramas históricos, documentales sobre la vida salvaje y partidos de tenis (sus jugadores favoritos eran Nadal y Alcaraz). Amaba a los animales, especialmente a los elefantes. Coleccionaba adornos de elefantes sólo con la trompa hacia arriba; de lo contrario, no le agradaban. Una vez se montó en el lomo de un elefante africano, una experiencia que disfrutó inmensamente y que recordaba con cariño. La noche de Despedida de Año y el día de Acción de Gracias no serán los mismos sin su arroz guisado con habichuelas tiernas, su arroz con gandules, flan y tembleque que deleitaron a tantos familiares y amigos. Su arroz con dulce, de consistencia perfecta, será difícil de imitar. Su familia la amaba muchísimo y las generaciones futuras sabrán el amor que ella inculcó en las vidas que tocó.
