Dorothy Amelia Allen, formerly Kerr, born in Duncans, Trelawny, Jamaica
to Florence and David Kerr (deceased) early Sunday morning on March 1, 1936,
the first of eight children (four of which are deceased).
Dorothy attended St. Joseph Girls School in Kingston then went on to
Convent of Mercy Academy "Alpha" where she graduated in 1954, then
attended Jamaica School of Commerce.
In 1955 she entered the Jamaica Post & Telegraph Service of the Jamaica
Government where she became a telegraph operator. Dorothy transferred to
Montego Bay where she met and married Cedric Allen. They had two children,
Christopher (deceased) and Karen. In 1961 she was transferred to the Halfway
Tree Post Office as Postmaster Class One in charge of the Telegraph
Department.
Dorothy migrated to the U.S. February 28, 1967; moved to Florida in 1989
where she retired early in 1998.
Dorothy was raised as a Roman Catholic but then she embraced the
Charismatic religion till her death. She loved her family and would stand by
them always. She didn't get a medal for sharing her feelings as she kept them
secret. But did whatever she could to help family and anyone else in need.
Dorothy's day started and ended in prayers. She liked to put her prayers
in writing. This is a short sample of one of them: "My Lord, I have never thanked you for my thorns. Teach me to see the glory in my cross and to value my thorns. Show me that I have to climb to thee by the
path of pain. Let my tears make my rainbows. Let faith operate in my heart so I
can have understanding. Help me to know that the cup of trials in my hand will
give me something sweet afterwards."
Dorothy is survived by brother Carl and sisters Lorna Tyndale-Bedasee,
Maureen Robinson, and Leonie Hoyes; her daughter Karen Allen-Lewin;
grandsons Kenneth Shaun Lewin and Kenan Alexander Lewin; granddaughters
Kimberly Allen and Elizabeth McCloud; great-grandson Kyrie Jaxen Lewin and
great-granddaughter Emma McCloud; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and
friends.
