Dorothy A. Norton (Dottie) passed away Friday October 22, 2021 in Orlando, Florida at the age of 97.
Dottie was born in Knoxville, Tennessee on November 7, 1923 to the late Clarence Clifford Norton and Mabel Binning Norton. She grew up in Spartanburg, S.C. where her father was the Dean of Students and Professor of Sociology at Wofford College. Her family instilled a love for the Methodist Church. She was an active member at Lake Junaluska Methodist Conference Center in North Carolina for many years and was also an active member of First United Methodist Church of Winter Park.
Dottie graduated from Columbia College in Columbia S.C. in 1945 with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Her chosen profession was teaching and she enjoyed interacting with young people as she taught them art. She taught school in Pensacola, Florida prior to joining the civil service as a teacher to the children of our armed service men and women in France, Germany, Turkey and the Philippines prior to obtaining her dream assignment at Kubasaki High School in Okinawa, Japan. She retired from teaching in 1984 but her love of other cultures and travel continued. She never married and enjoyed her independence.
Dottie was a lifetime member of the University Club of Rollins College in Winter Park, Florida where she continued her lifelong learning and arts and crafts. She volunteered for many years with Habitat for Humility and United Methodist Committee on Relief providing supplies to disaster victims.
She was a resident of Allegro Retirement Center in Winter Park, Florida where she had many friends.
Dottie was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Howard Binning Norton. She is survived by her nephew Clifford Norton and nieces Rebecca Crawford, Laura Fish, Claudia Norton and Esther Norton.
The memorial service for Dottie will be at the First United Methodist Church of Winter Park on November 12, 2021 at 2:00 pm. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to C.C. Norton scholarship fund at Wofford College in Spartanburg, S.C. or First United Methodist Church of Winter Park, Florida.
