Dorothy Tuthill Chapman, 83, passed away on Sunday, December 12, 2004, after a long illness. She was born in Long Island, New York, raised in Phoenix, Arizona, and has made Orlando her home since 1958. Beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Dorothy was a respected journalist and dear friend to her cherished "Sentinel gang" and her many devoted readers over the years.
A proud graduate of Arizona State University with a degree in journalism, she spent twenty four years as a staff member of The Orlando Sentinel, most notably as the long time Food Section Editor, food critic, and columnist. Dorothy was the author of several cookbooks, including the popular "Thought You'd Never Ask" and "A Taste of Florida" series. Recipient of numerous awards and professional certifications, Dorothy was past president of the Florida Press Club, member of the Council for Continuing Education for Women, honorary member of the Florida Food Service Executives Association, and is noted in "Who's Who of American Women".
Dorothy is the loving mother of three daughters, Deborah Claire Snyder (Peter), Rosemary Lantta (Ken), and Amy Elliot (Rob Reedy), and raised us to be strong, independent, and spirited. She adored--and was adored-- by her grandchildren, Christopher and Dan Snyder and Julia and Jennifer Elliot, and great grandchildren Christopher and Allison Snyder. Dorothy is preceded in death by her beloved parents Lillian and Daniel, and younger brother Daniel.
A memorial service celebrating her life will be held for family and friends at 2:30 pm on Thursday, December 16, 2004 at the chapel at First Presbyterian Church of Orlando, 106 E. Church Street, Orlando.
