Douglas A. Clee, age 86, of Orlando, Florida passed away on Friday, February 5, 2021 at AdventHealth Orlando Hospital.
Douglas was born on September 9, 1934 in Jersey City, NJ, son of the late Henry Roland and Helen (Hudson) Clee. From 1953 to 1956, he honorably served his country as a member of the United State Army. On December 26, 1967, Douglas married the former Bridget Lenahan. He was employed as an over the road truckdriver, and most recently, he had been working in furniture sales before his retirement.
His time and experience in the workforce included a career as an insurance investigator, development officer, lobbyist, bus driver, independent owner operator trucker, inventor and furniture salesperson. His passion for patriotic causes led him to spend his free time from his full time career as an insurance investigator working for pro-American causes during the turbulent 1960s. As a casual Christian in 1964, he made his decision for Christ that changed the trajectory of his life and the lives of many others. Subsequently, he worked for an international ministry in the Midwest that led to an influential career on Capitol Hill as a lobbyist, and their editor of a national publication. Success in politics instilled a desire to abandon politics and devote all his love and energy to his immediate family.
Working two jobs for years, he saved enough money to buy a semi-truck and took his family on the road with him to 47 states travelling over 750,000 miles taking his son out of public school before home schooling was a term. He declared his adventure 'the first family of the American roads' which was reflective of his love of his family. On a rare lone trucking journey, he was inspired in the desert and went on to obtain an innovative United States Patent for solar power and water purification.
While struggling through a disability in the late 80s and through the 90s, Douglas presided over support groups of chronic pain patients, frequently taking calls late into the night from people who were in much better shape than him. In all his efforts, whenever the opportunity presented itself, he would let people know of the decision he made to receive grace. Even in times of extended care and hospitalizations, he was known and remembered for his love and devotion to his wife and his joyful disposition with staff.
Douglas is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Bridget; their son, Roland Clee and his wife, Andrea, of Orlando; and his brother, Richard Clee and his wife, Frances, of Toronto, ON.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Gordon Clee.
Committal services with full military honors will be on Tuesday, February 16, 2021 at 11:00 am at Cape Canaveral National Cemetery, 5525 US-1, Mims, Florida 32754.
A memorial service will be held in the future.
