Duane Southerland

July 27, 1953 — July 7, 2015

Duane (Dan) E. Southerland, 61 of Apopka, Florida passed away the evening of July 7, 2015. He is survived by his wife, Beverley Southerland; his four children, Heather Ridgeway, Trent Beverly, Patrick Southerland and Connor Beverly; his grandchildren, Joeseph Ridgeway, Tyler Beverly, Drayton Beverly, Isabel Southerland and Peyton Southerland; his parents, David and Reba Southerland; his younger siblings, Tim, Shawn, David and Brad; of course, his faithful furry son Oreo.

He was born in Huntsville, Alabama on July 27, 1953. He honorably served 16 years in the US Navy as a Corpsman. He received a Bachelor of Science in Health Care Administration from Southern Illinois University and was a licensed Radiologic Technologist. His passion for the medical career field began as an EMT and firefighter for the Altamonte Springs volunteer fire department. Career highlights included working for Florida Hospital for over 25 years and being a clinical coordinator and professor at Keiser University.

Dan adored his large family and loved spending as much time as possible with them. He always had pearls of wisdom to share. He loved to teach his grandchildren, children, and anyone who would listen. Even when his health took him away from his beloved career he never stopped teaching. In the hospital he would share his knowledge with the students, nurses, technologists, and even his own doctors and specialists. Dan was always the go to guy if you had a question. If he did not have the answer he would find it. He always wanted to give the very best of himself he had and leave his footprint. When he did take time out for himself he enjoyed fishing, scuba diving, camping, and most anything outdoors. One of his greatest gifts to this world was his voice. Every time he got a chance to sing at church, in the car, karaoke, or with family around the piano he always led the way. He is greatly loved, respected and admired by many.
