Eleanor Kay Copening

June 27, 1946 — August 25, 2020

On Tuesday, August 25, 2020, Eleanor Kay Copening, loving wife, and mother, passed away at the age of 74. Kay, as she preferred to be called, was born on June 27, 1946 in Fort Smith, Arkansas, to Clifford and Eleanor Hill.

She received her bachelor's degree from the University of Arkansas in 1968. She then proceeded to earn the equivalent of a master's degree in order to become a medical technologist. She married John H. Copening on June 20, 1981, in Fort Smith, Arkansas. Kay was preceded in death by her father, Clifford, and mother, Eleanor.

She is survived by her husband, John H. Copening (Orlando, FL), son, John Michael Copening (Orlando, FL), stepdaughter, Erika Michele Copening (Chicago, IL), brother, Richard Hill (North Little Rock, AR), and sister Rose Ellis (Richardson, TX).

She was a medical technologist, having most recently worked at OneBlood (Florida's Blood Centers) in Orlando, Florida, until she retired in 2009. Kay was a believer in Jesus Christ. Her mother, Eleanor, served as secretary for First Baptist Church of Fort Smith, Arkansas for over 30 years. Kay lived in Arkansas, Texas, Colorado, California, and Florida. The last 24 years of her life were spent in Orlando, Florida. She was an avid tennis player and met her husband, John, playing in tennis leagues in Fort Smith, Arkansas. Her passions also included watching sports such as football and basketball, collecting hummingbird trinkets, participating in Bible studies, visiting Disney theme parks, and going to the mall. She was a lover of all animals and had various dogs and cats with her throughout her life.

Kay was a sacrificial servant for those in her life. She loved God and demonstrated her faith on a daily basis. She invested her life heavily in her family. She was quiet and reserved; pure in heart and not one to cause conflict. A peacemaker who sought to do a good job and be respected by those around her. She was very proud of her education and career as a medical technologist.

Kay was formally diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2018 after several years of memory struggles. She contracted COVID-19 through her nursing home in August 2020. While the last several years have been a challenge, we are confident that she is renewed in Christ in heaven. Kay will be dearly missed by her family, with hope in seeing her again in God's presence.

A graveside funeral service will be held on Monday, August 31st, 2020, at Chuluota Cemetery on 877 Lake Mills Rd, Chuluota, FL 32766 at 11:30am eastern. Donations or flowers may be sent to 820 Bella Vida Blvd, Orlando, FL 32828. If you wish to submit a personal story about Kay to the family, you may email mike@copening.net.
