Our Mami/Grandma/Great Grandma and Great-Great Grandma
Elsida Calderon was born on November 14, 1932 in Fajardo, Puerto Rico to her parents, Esther and Manuel Rivera. To this union, she had brothers: Salvador, Abilio, Sergio, Ovilio, Osvaldo, Elpidio and sisters: Aida, Irma and Adelaida.
Growing up, Elsida enjoyed school and loved to study. She attended the University of Puerto Rico for one year and shared how far her father thought one day she would be a lawyer. One day at a family/friends gathering, she met Hilarion Calderon. They became friends, dated and eventually married on August 29, 1953. To their union, they raised five children: Hector (Frances), Yolanda (Greg), Wanda, (Glenda), Doris and Elsida, who had pre-deceased them.
Our Mami was a dedicated mother whose world was her "family". She worked several years for the Department of Illinois Health Nutrition in Chicago, Illinois prior to moving to Florida where she then worked after school programs caring for children, which she loved very much.
Elsie, as she was known among her friends at Mai Kai Condominiums, was a part of a group of women that gathered together and shared their family histories, celebrated birthdays and were bonded with strong friendships. They were lovingly known as the "Golden Girls". It was a joy to see them together.
Among her children, Mami is known for her strength and love for her family. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren thought she was the cutest little thing. She would not hesitate to pick up a ball and play catch.
Mami at 92 years, went home to be with the Lord on February 12, 2025. She will never be forgotten and forever live in the hearts of her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, in-laws and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
