Emilia Colindres Fletes

Emilia Angelica Colindres Fletes passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 20th, 2020 in her home in Lake Mary, Florida at the age of 86. She was born on May 28th, 1934 in the small village of Talanga in Honduras, Central America. She spent most of her life in the capital of Honduras, Tegucigalpa, before immigrating to the United States as a single mother to start a new life in Jersey City, New Jersey in 1970. She had studied nursing in Honduras yet, when she moved to the United States seeking a prosperous future for her children and future generations, she had to start her nursing training all over again while at the same time working in a factory and studying nursing and English at night. Emilia was 35 years old at the time she made such a valiant move. From 1970 until 1973, she endured being away from her three small children, who she had left in care of her mother back in the old village. During that time, she arranged permanent US residency for the children and her mother, and she saved up enough money to bring them all finally to the United States in 1973. During the three years of separation, she sent money home religiously to assure the well-being of her mother and the children. After re-uniting the family, she finished her studies, left the factory, and re-started her interrupted 40-year nursing career at Saint Francis Hospital and Meadowlands Hospital in New Jersey. During all those years she provided shelter and security for her family and, as a single mother, proper morals and education for her children. We are grateful.

She was one of five children, a mother of three, grandmother of three, and great-grandmother of two. She provided great inspiration, not only to her children, but to her family and friends alike. She loved keeping busy and her mind engaged by spending hours reading, or with various handicrafts throughout the years, as well as cooking for family and friends. Traveling was also one of her passions. While growing up in her small village, at some point she may have imagined going to Mexico or Cuba (as she did) but it was hard for her to imagine she would be able to also visit Switzerland, Japan, Jerusalem, Egypt, Italy, France, Spain and end up living a great part of her lifetime in the United States!! She also loved to dance and could be described as fun loving, energetic, practical, honest, straightforward, rebellious, persistent, encouraging, risk taking, and a great achiever. She was not only a good daughter, sister, aunt, friend, but also a great mother who sacrificed, worked very hard, and lead an exemplary life full of love for her children, family, and friends. In her last days, lacking the health and energy she always had, she was ready for her journey to be with God – and she has taken that journey. She will forever be in our hearts.

Emilia is survived by her eldest son, Hector; her second son, Nelson; her daughter Maria; 3 grandchildren, Vannesa, Marlon and Amanda; and 2 great-grandchildren, Catalina and Sakiko.

Emilia's wishes were to be cremated and her remains to be taken to her place of birth to be placed in her mother's grave. Private cremation services will be held by the immediate family together with a blessing of her remains and a last eulogy. To encourage safety during the current Covid pandemic and to extend the service to those who may wish to join remotely, the service will be streamed via Zoom at 3 p.m. EST at the link below. Emilia Angélica Colindres Fletes falleció pacíficamente el domingo 20 de septiembre de 2020 en su casa de habitación en Lake Mary, Florida, a la edad de 86 años. Nació el 28 de mayo de 1934 en el pequeño pueblo de Talanga en Honduras, Centroamérica. Pasó la mayor parte de su vida en la capital de Honduras, Tegucigalpa, antes de emigrar a los Estados Unidos, como madre soltera para comenzar una nueva vida en Jersey City, Nueva Jersey en 1970. Había estudiado enfermería en Honduras, cuando se mudó a Estados Unidos buscando un futuro próspero para sus hijos y las generaciones futuras, tuvo que comenzar su formación en enfermería de nuevo. Mientras trabajaba en una fábrica y estudiaba enfermería e inglés por la noche. Emilia tenía 35 años cuando hizo este cambio tan valiente. Desde 1970 hasta 1973, soportó el estar lejos de sus tres pequeños hijos, a quienes había dejado al cuidado de su madre en el pueblo. Durante ese tiempo, arregló la residencia permanente en los Estados Unidos para los niños y su madre y ahorró suficiente dinero para traerlos finalmente en 1973. Durante los tres años de separación, envió dinero a casa religiosamente para asegurar el bienestar de su madre y sus hijos. Después de reunir a su familia, terminó sus estudios, dejó la fábrica y reinició su carrera de enfermería de 40 años en el Hospital Saint Francis y el Hospital Meadowlands en Nueva Jersey. Durante todos esos años brindó refugio y seguridad a su familia como madre soltera, proporcionó valores morales y la educación adecuada para sus hijos. Los cuales estamos muy agradecidos.

Emilia fue una de cinco hermanos, madre de tres, abuela de tres y bisabuela de dos. Ella fue una gran inspiración, no solo para sus hijos, sino también para su familia y amigos. Le encantaba mantenerse ocupada y pasando horas leyendo o haciendo diferentes artesanías a lo largo de los años, le gustaba cocinar para familiares y amigos. Otra de sus pasiones era viajar. ¡Mientras crecía en su pequeño pueblo, en ningún momento pudo imaginar ir a México o Cuba (como lo hizo), pero era difícil para ella imaginar que también podría visitar Suiza, Japón, Jerusalén, Egipto, Italia, Francia, España y terminar viviendo gran parte de su vida en Estados Unidos!! Le encantaba bailar y podría describirse como amante de la diversión, una persona enérgica, práctica, honesta, directa, rebelde, persistente, alentadora, arriesgada y una gran triunfadora. No solo fue una buena hija, hermana, tía, amiga, sino también una gran madre que se sacrificó, trabajó muy duro y llevó una vida ejemplar llena de amor por sus hijos, familiares y amigos. En sus últimos días, al empeorar su salud y ya no teniendo la energía que siempre tuvo, estaba lista para emprender su viaje con el Señor y ya lo ha hecho. Ella estará por siempre en nuestros corazones.

A Emilia le sobreviven su hijo mayor, Héctor; su segundo hijo, Nelson; su hija María; 3 nietos, Vannesa, Marlon y Amanda; y 2 bisnietos, Catalina y Sakiko.

Los deseos de Emilia fueron que la cremaran y que sus restos fueran llevados a su lugar de nacimiento para ser depositados en la tumba de su madre. Los servicios privados de cremación estarán a cargo de la familia inmediata junto con un servicio de bendición y un último homenaje.
