Euna Mays Cope passed away at home on September 18, 2013, in Orlando, Florida, at the age of 90. She was born in Fair Play, S.C., the fourth of seven children of Kate Harris Mays and Dr. William Clayton Mays, a country doctor.
She earned a bachelor's degree in home economics from Winthrop College with a minor in nutrition, a lifelong passion, and a master's degree in counseling from Western Carolina University. A strong believer in the value of education, she taught school in Melbourne, Florida, was a guidance counselor in Brevard, N.C., and Greenville, S.C., and is fondly remembered by her students.
She was a talented though shy pianist and greatly enjoyed music she considered "heart soothing", and had volunteered her time at an adult literacy project.
She was the beloved wife of 70 years of Gerald B. Cope, who survives her along with sons Gerald B. Cope, Jr. (Carol), David (Marta), and Wayne; grandchildren Kathy (Kelly) Simpkins, Jason (Amy) Cope, and Caroline Soret; great-grandchildren Darian, Jessica, Gabriel, and Gavin; brother Clayton (Martha) Mays, and many nieces and nephews, for all of whom she had great affection.
A viewing will be at Newcomer Family Funeral Home, 895 S. Goldenrod Road, Orlando, Fl 32822 on September 24, from 4 to 9 pm. The funeral will be at St. Luke's United Methodist Church, 4851 S. Apopka-Vineland Road, Orlando 32819 on September 25, at 10 am. Interment will follow thereafter at Florida Memorial Gardens, 5950 S. U.S. Highway #1, Rockledge, Fl 32955.
