Francisco Nieves Marrero

Francisco "Fran" Nieves Marrero, who was 92, passed away on Tuesday, June 30, 2015, at the Orlando VA Community Living Center in Lake Nona.
Francisco was a combat veteran serving in the Army during World War II from April 17, 1941 through November 30, 1945. He was born on August 7, 1922 to Domingo Nieves Pagan and Rafaela Marrero in Santurce, Puerto Rico. He was a Florida resident from 1967 until his death, living primarily in the South Miami area. His formal education was short but he was a self-educated in mathematics and general mechanics. In his youth in Puerto Rico, Francisco was a boxer on the amateur level, and continued to box while serving in the army in England, France and Germany. Francisco settled in New York City in 1945 and worked as a merchant seaman, on the assembly line at General Motors in New Jersey and as a cab driver through the streets of New York City. Francisco enjoyed playing Dominos, Bingo, playing Bocce Ball with his neighbors at his Golden Towers community and watching the Mets play baseball.
He is survived by his three sisters, Carmen Ashby, Teresa Nieves and Eugenia Nieves; daughters, Dolores G. Arroyo of Kissimmee, FL, Esther G. Nieves of New York, NY., Lou Ann Nieves Baerga of Denton, TX; and sons, Francisco Nieves Jr. of Monroe, NY, Felix D. Nieves of New York, NY. He has son-in-law Raymond Arroyo Sr. and daughter-in-law Eleanor Nieves. He has seven grandchildren, Raymond, Denise, Steven, Wendy, Nicole, Desiree, and Elan. He has nine great-grandchildren, Taina, Matthew, Jasmine, Mark Anthony, Gianna, Audrey, Noelia, Olivia, and Jayden. He has numerous cousins and friends in Puerto Rico. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Jacqueline Nieves.

Final Viewing is Tuesday, July 7, 2015, at Newcomer Funeral Home, at 10am. Interment will follow at the Florida National Cemetery, 6502 S. W. 102nd Avenue, Bushnell, FL 33513.
