Frederick Marvin Potts, Jr. of Orlando, Florida passed away on Monday, October 16, 2023 peacefully at home at the age of 91.
He was born on August 18, 1932, in Jersey City, New Jersey, son to Mildred (Weber) Potts and Frederick Marvin Potts, Sr.
Fred was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife Margaret E. (Roy) Potts; brother Richard Drake; sisters Dolores Funk and Lorriane Drake; brothers-in-law John, Gene, Tommy, Harry, Billy and Perry Roy; sisters-in-law Theresa and Cookie Roy; and grandson Nicholas Alan Potts.
He is survived by his wife Diann E. (Flick) Potts; his 5 children Frederick M. Potts III, Laura Potts-Sprague and her husband Michael, Alan Roy Potts and his wife Jane, Gregory Potts and his wife Brenda, and Sharon Potts; his 14 grandchildren Frederick M. Potts IV, Jillian, Travis, Jarrett, Dylan, Alison, Christopher, Courtenay, Curtis, Kelly, Justine, Cody, Matt and Riley; and great-grandchildren McKenzie, Quinn, Jameson, Harrison, Colin, Evie, Julia, and Baleigh.
He is also survived by brother-in-law Albert Roy; sister-in-law Cathy Roy; nieces Debbie, Dawn, Kelly and Johnna; and nephew Shawn.
He graduated from Highland Falls High School with honors and was drafted into the U.S Army, where he served for 2 years in Fort Meade, Maryland. He married Maggie (Margaret E.) Roy on July 26, 1953 and they raised 5 children together in Highland Falls and New Windsor, New York until her death on May 10, 1988.
He worked for the U.S. government at West Point for 37 years, starting as a "soda jerk" and working his way up to become the Manager of Cadet Restaurants for all of West Point. In that role, he managed food service for cadets and officers at 7 different locations on post at the revered military academy.
Fred found love again and married Diann E. Flick on January 2, 2000. They were snowbirds, and enjoyed their retirement while splitting time between Orlando and Milford, Pennsylvania.
He was a devoted son, husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He loved his family, had many close lifelong friends, and loved to spend time vacationing, boating, golfing, fishing, hunting, and getting a good tan.
He looked forward to and enjoyed family gatherings, and was often heard saying, "I have the best family in the world." He instilled in us all a love and commitment to family, friends and country. He had an amazing memory, and often shared entertaining stories about his life, experiences and history that captivated everyone around. Fred was a huge presence and a positive influence on his family, extended family, friends and the many other lives he touched. He will be deeply missed.
Services and Gatherings: The Potts family will hold a service for family and friends at Newcomer Funeral Home – East Orlando Chapel, 895 S. Goldenrod Rd, Orlando FL 32822 on Monday, October 23, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. followed by a luncheon to celebrate his life at High Tide Harry's, 4645 South Semoran Blvd in Orlando at 12noon.
Interment will be at Cedar Hills Cemetery in Marlboro, New York. In lieu of flowers, his family requests donations to the Wounded Warrior Project and St. Jude's Children's Hospital.
