George John Vernau passed away peacefully with his two sons at his side on May 18, 2013 in Orlando, FL. George was born in Pittsburgh, PA on December 31, 1923 to George F. Vernau and Margaret Vogt Vernau.
He graduated from Brentwood High School in 1941 and worked in the Homestead Steel Works until 1945 making armor plate for the war effort. He married Marjorie Louise King Vernau on September 1, 1944. In 1945 he began work with Pennsylvania Central Airlines, a company that eventually became part of United Airlines. He retired from United in 1981.
George was an avid hunter and fisherman, often traveling to Canada in the summers. George and Marge moved to Orlando, FL in 1984 where they were active in the United Retirees Association and neighborhood activities. After retirement they enjoyed many trips to Hawaii, Alaska, Arizona, Wisconsin, California, New England, Chincoteague Island and Texas. Marge passed away on June 7, 2005.
George is survived by sons George and wife Nancy of Houston, Texas and Tom and wife Linda of Eau Claire, WI. He is also survived by his brother Lee and wife Ann Vernau of Lake Havasu City, AZ. He had 5 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and another expected in September. A memorial will be held in Texas at a later date.
