Helen Geiger Murphy passed away peacefully on December 12. Helen and her husband, Ken, retired to Orlando in 1979 from Dayton, Ohio where Helen worked for the Mead-WestVaco Corporation. Helen's only son, Mike, died unexpectedly on March 3, 2002 at the age of 52. Ken, a veteran of World War II, died three days later on March 6, 2002 after a long illness. Mike was a Vietnam Veteran and served in the U.S. Air Force.
Helen was very well known for her delicious "buckeyes", a chocolate and peanut butter treat. She made hundreds of them every Christmas holiday season and lovingly gave them as gifts to her family and friends. Helen was also an avid baseball fan and loved the Cincinnati Reds.
Helen is originally from Portsmouth, Ohio and also lived in Chillicothe and Dayton before coming to Orlando. Helen is survived by her many friends and "adopted" families, including Anthony & Sandee Marano and their daughters (Lindsay & Jenni); and Jill & Drew Clifton and their children (Jeremy, Nicole, Josh) and two granddaughters. Helen's many good friends include Jay and Elsa Schmieder in Houston; lunch buddy Sandy Johnson (Tom) in Longwood; a dear friend, Ollie Llewelyn, from Mobile, Alabama; and Jean and Hudson McMurtrie in Orlando. Helen was a member of Conway United Methodist Church.
Funeral arrangements are being provided by Newcomer Funeral Home. Service will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 16, at 9:30 AM. Burial beside her husband and son will follow at Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or a similar organization which assists our Veterans.
