Ilse Marie Gertrude Fischer Koenig
Born August 11, 1913 in Morden, Manitoba, Canada; died July 28, 2009 in Orlando, Florida. Gertrude was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, George F. Koenig and their eldest child, William E. Koenig; her brothers, Frederick and Ernest Fischer and her parents, Anna Elisabeth and Frederich Fischer. She is survived by her daughter, Susan Koenig-Ellenburg and son-in-law, Richard Ellenburg; son, Steven Koenig and daughter-in-law, Carol Koenig; daughter-in-law, Suzanne Koenig; six grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Gertrude began her nursing career in Peoria, Illinois in 1934, worked at Jefferson Barracks, Missouri during World War II and the University of Missouri Teaching Hospital and retired from John Gaston Hospital, Memphis, Tennessee as head nurse. Gertrude enjoyed telling stories and was a prolific letter writer. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, aunt and loyal friend and was an inspiration to all who knew her. Mrs. Koenig exhibited great dignity both in life and in death. She has touched many lives and made her world a better place in which to live. Our mother will be sorely missed. There will be a family service in Norman, Oklahoma. In lieu of flowers, it is requested that a donation be made in her name to her favorite charities, Doctors Without Borders or to Cornerstone Hospice Foundation, 108 West America Street, Orlando, FL 32801.
