James "Jimmy" L. Devine died April 20, 2022 at age 73 at Advent Health after a long illness. He was born January 7, 1949 in the Azore Islands, Portugal as his father was stationed there. He moved to Lexington, Kentucky and then to Florida in 1957.
Jimmy went to Chickasaw Elementary School, Howard Junior High, and Edgewater High School. He loved sports, and played football, softball, and excelled in track in high school. When at Howard Junior High, he took shop class and excelled in it developing his love of carpentry. He was also a member of Civitan and later the Orlando Jaycees.
Jimmy was a perfectionist when it came to carpentry! He had a list of clients who would call on him routinely to do special projects as they knew what they had envisioned would turn out to be even better! The family had some property in Northeast Georgia mountains, and when it came time to build on it, Jimmy just started laying out the foundation - no blueprints, no drawings - it was all in his head.
Jimmy loved watching every kind of sport on TV. His wife would say, "If it wears a number and sweats, he'll watch it!" But he especially loved his Kentucky Wildcats in basketball. He was a "part time" Gator football fan and enjoyed going to "The Swamp" to watch some games, and also enjoyed going to Magic games. But he especially loved being a coach on the church Upward Basketball program, where he would be Alicia's coach for several years.
Jimmy is preceded in death by his mother, Frances Steele Devine McCormick; his father Charles Calvin Devine; grandfather Benjamin Harris Devine; and his grandmother Clara Steele Likens.
He is survived by his wife Cheryl Devine; daughter Alicia Wallace (husband Joe) and baby Max; brother Charles Devine; sister Debi Steinbrecher; sister Misty Nicholas (husband Andy); and brother Richard McCormick (wife Kathy) and many other aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
A Graveside Service will be held Saturday, May 14 at 11:00 AM At Woodlawn Memorial Park 400 Woodlawn Cemetery Road, Gotha FL 34734.
