Joan Hammon August 1925-March 2021
Joan Hammon passed away peacefully on March 1st, at the age of 95. She was born August 14th,1925 in South Bend, Indiana, to Paul and Laura Franklin (Allen), and was the youngest of seven. After graduating from Tech High School in Indianapolis, she went to work for Wilkenson's Lumber where she met and married Jess Hammon in 1944. Their daughter, Sandy (Sandra), was born in 1945.
Joan worked at Standard Life of Indiana until 1963, when she and Jess decided to make a move to Florida to start a new life. Unfortunately due to his health declining, they had to move back to Indianapolis and Joan was re-employed at Standard Life. She retired with over 25 years of service in 1979. Once again, they returned to Florida and settled in St. Petersburg, Florida. After her husband died in 1980, she came to live with her daughter and family in Orlando. Shortly after, she began her employment at the UCF Bookstore and retired 1997.
She collected dolls for a number of years and enjoyed going to doll shows in search of finding unique limited ones to add to her collection. She also enjoyed reading, playing cards, and most especially retail therapy. She traditionally watched the Indy 500 every year and never lost her passion for Indiana University basketball. Even with all the years she lived in Florida, she always remained a "Hoosier" at heart.
Joan was predeceased by her parents, husband Jess, brothers Robert, Paul, Charles, James, Floyd, and sister, Marietta. She is survived by her daughter, Sandra Williams, granddaughter Lauren Perez-Ripley (Wayne) and one great grandson, Camden Perez. She also had several nieces and nephews. The family will have a private celebration at a later time to honor her requests. In lieu of a formal service, it was her wish to have her ashes placed at the Gulf of Mexico because of her love of the beach. She held many of her fondest memories of their family vacations in St. Petersburg.
The family has requested that in lieu of flowers a donation can be made to the Salvation Army, or any local no-kill animal shelter as they were her favorite charities.
