Joan Brooke Wavell

Joan B. Wavell passed away at 94 years old on January 26, 2018 . Born in England, Ms. Wavell was one of five siblings.

In 1944 she graduated with honors from Royal Holloway College with a BA in Medieval History after only two years due to the pressures of the war effort. She was then assigned to the Ministry of Supply for the Disposal of Surplus War Stores in June of 44 and assigned to Cairo Egypt as assistant to Brigadier Mount in charge of Middle East Disposal. It was in Egypt that she first met her husband to be on a boat on the river Nile. Returning in 1947 she was assigned to the Cabinet Offices to assist in working on the Official History of the Civilian Contribution to WWII…specifically the mobilization of women for the war effort. In 1948 she married Bruce B. Wavell and had two children.

She then moved to Winter Park Florida in 1959 when her husband accepted a post as Professor at Rollins College. He later went on to head the Philosophy Department. Joan had a third child and became involved in the Civil Rights Movement becoming president of the Welbourne Ave Day Nursery in Winter Park in 1967.She was employed by the Morse Gallery of Art on the Rollins Campus from 1973 to 1976 when the College decided to build the Cornell Fine Arts Center. She then inventoried the College art collection which at the time was dispersed throughout the College; prior to transferring it to the new building. She was Administrator of the Cornell Art Museum from 1978 through 1988 during which time her efforts resulted in the museum receiving its initial accreditation.

A beloved mother who was active in the community, Joan Wavell is survived by son Richard Wavell, daughter Barbara Wavell/Lamberty and husband Kane Lamberty, daughter Alice Herndon and husband Ray Herndon, and three grandchildren Ben and Amanda Wavell, Lindsey Lamberty and one great-grandchild Lily.

The memorial service will be held February 13th at the Winter Park Chamber of Commerce on Lyman from 5-7 pm. Additional parking is available across from the Chamber at City Hall.
