Joan Elizabeth Witten

March 5, 1936 — June 30, 2020

Joan Elizabeth Duke Witten was born March 5, 1936 to Arthur Lester "Ben" Duke and Alice Ellon Edmund Duke in Lakeland, Florida. She graduated from Florida Southern College. As an educator, Joan taught in Chadbourn, NC, Radnor and Sunbury, Ohio, Kathleen and Zephyrhills, FL. She made a career change in 1964 while living in Lakeland, Florida, and moved to Child Support in the Department of Revenue, State of Florida. She progressed and was promoted to the position of Program Administrator of the central counties which included Orange, Seminole, Osceola, and Brevard Counties. Having succeeded in her second career as well as her first, she retired in 1998.

Joan married the Reverend William Dean Witten, August 28, 1960. She served as a wonderful partner of her pastor husband in seven United Methodist Churches of the Florida Conference of the United Methodist Church. At the time of her death, she was a member of Sanlando United Methodist Church of Longwood, Florida.

Joan is survived by three children: Wendell Duke (Ellen), Lisa Witten Mindermann (John), Ben Albert (Beth). She is also survived by eleven Grandchildren: William David Witten, Brittany Ann Witten, Meghan Elizabeth Witten, Madison Elise Witten, Jordan Noel Williams, Alexa Joan Williams, Jonathan Dean Witten, Danielle Faith Witten, Nicholas Edgar Witten, and one great grandchild, Olivia Grace Powers.
Joan is also survived by her loving sister, Laraine Legette, and sister-in-law, Sue Butler. She is also survived by nieces, Sarah Ellon, Joan (James), Jennifer (Marc), Elizabeth, Victoria, and Savanna.
Joan is survived by her husband and family, and we were blessed by her love throughout her life.

Due to the pandemic, Joan's memorial service will be held at Sanlando United Methodist Church during the month of November.

In lieu of flowers, friends are invited to make a contribution to the Sanlando United Methodist Church (sanlando.org) in memory of Joan Witten.
