John Claus Hahn

July 31, 1918 – March 4, 2013

By any measure, John Hahn was a great American. Born in New York City and raised in Medford, Long Island. John led a life full of accomplishments and adventure. He was a proud patriot, a devoted husband, a father of fur and a loving grandfather and great grandfather.
John married Marianne Wolf in 1943. They enjoyed 59 years of marriage until Marianne passed away in 2002.
John was a proud veteran of the United States Navy having served throughout WWII. He served as a flight deck officer on the USS Ranger, Saratoga, and several more aircraft carriers. He retired as a Warrant Officer with 22 years of service. John continued his professional career as a Safety Engineer with the Martin Marietta Corporation for another 22 years.
John was a graduate of Florida Southern University and earned his Master's Degree in Business Administration from Rollins College. He was a proud member of the Masonic Lodge for 70 years and raised his own father, son and several grandsons. John was a world-wide traveler, avid hunter, fisherman, and was a licensed pilot for aerial acrobatics. He easily made friends wherever he travelled and was highly respected and admired by everyone who knew him. A lifetime of accomplishments include saving the life of a young drowning victim in his hometown.
Late in life, John fought old age and death with the determination portrayed like the movie character of Rocky Balboa. Against overwhelming odds, John entered the ring determined to prevail. With an iron will, he punched, kicked, bit, clawed and head-butted old age. His family and friends were amazed at his strength and tenacity. If any mortal could defeat death, John would be the man. Moreover, if he could have, John would have crossed over into the afterlife, driving his car, heavily armed with his many guns. As it was, he did not go gently into that goodnight and we are quite certain the grim reaper has got a bloody nose and bruises for his efforts….. Just like "Polack Helen" did so many years ago.
Throughout his life, John was a strong man with a fierce determination to remain independent. He lived in his own home, managed his business affairs, and even drove his car until very recently. In the Navy, John would recall that the highest compliment a sailor could receive was a "job well done." After an incredible 94 years, that is how John would want his life remembered, …. a job well done!
John is survived by his daughter Karen Rauth, son John C. Hahn, daughters Barbara Han, and Deborah Hahn. Grandchildren Lauren Watai, Christopher Rauth, Brandon Wiechert, Brit Zerbo, John Cody Hahn, Amanda Frederick, and Leah McKaig. Great Grandchildren Lila, Kai, and Koa Watai, and Nora and Evan Frederick.
