John "Jack" Arthur Shoemaker, retired PEPCO General Foreman
John Arthur Shoemaker, known to friends as "Jack", passed away peacefully on Friday, January 26, 2018, at the age of 94. at Longwood, FL. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Eva (nee Revis); nine children, John (Pat) Shoemaker, Michael (Nancy) Shoemaker, Teresa (Bernard) Feehley, Robert (Lisa) Shoemaker, Mary Ellen Shoemaker, Denise (Patrick) McCarthy, Steven (Laurie) Shoemaker, Paul Shoemaker, and Sean (Rachel) Shoemaker, 15 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
Jack was born in Lansing, MI to John and Martha Trickett. He was raised by Nelson P. and Naomi V. Shoemaker who adopted him at the age of 2 upon the passing of his parents.
He enlisted in the Army at the age of 19 in 1943, serving as a Private during WWII. Jack landed on Omaha Beach on D-Day plus three, fought in the battle for France, was a member of the famous "Red Ball Express" during the battle of the Ardennes, better known as the "Battle of the Bulge," and fought all the way into the German Rhineland. After discharge from the Army, he attended Bliss Electrical School in Takoma Park, MD. He worked briefly for Westinghouse in Sharon, PA and then in 1950 began his career with Potomac Electric Power Company, "PEPCO" in Washington, D.C. He retired as a General Foreman after more than 30 years.
Jack could play golf like a professional and in later years enjoyed cross stitch, paint by numbers, stamp collecting, and reading.
He will be remembered for his pleasant demeanor and his friendliness to complete strangers. Jack was blessed with the patience of a saint, one who tackled life's challenges with ease. A survivor and an inspiration, Jack passed along to his children and grandchildren a love of hard work and sacrifice.
Jack is predeceased by his first wife Mary Helen Gallagher Shoemaker, his brothers Arthur and John Edward Trickett, his sisters Edith Mae Trickett Baxter, Sara Alice Jane Trickett Dudley and Dorothy Martha Roost Beecher and his grandson, Timothy Michael Shoemaker.
A Celebration of Jack's life will be held at 2:30 pm, on Sunday, March 18, at Camp Ithiel, 2037 Hempel Ave., Gotha, FL 34734, with Reverend Terry Grove officiating. His ashes will be interred at Deepdale Cemetery, Lansing, MI on April 14th.
