John Henry Ward, Jr. was born on July 5, 1935 in Twymans Mill, VA to Annie & John Henry Ward, Sr., who raised eight children in Virginia and Jamaica, NY.
After graduating from Jamaica H.S. as Senior Class President and a Varsity Baseball All-Star, John was drafted into the U.S. Army; however, he met the love of his life – Mary Verdier, before being assigned service duty in Ansbach, Germany.
John & Mary married on August 3, 1958, spent their early years together in Germany, and then raised three children – Atiba (Michael), Donna and Greg, in Jamaica, NY.
From 1960 – 77, John served as a New York Police Department officer and began his law enforcement career as a motorcycle policeman.
He moved his family to Columbia, MD for two years where John worked as Vice President of Howard Security, a private security firm, and then the family returned to New York City and settled in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn for almost two decades.
John resumed his public service with the NYC Department of Human Services in the 1980s and concluded his professional career in the private sector as co-owner and manager of The Winners Circle restaurant in Manhattan in 1998.
During their retirement years, John & Mary lived in Hilton Head, SC and Apopka/Altamonte Springs, FL, where they enjoyed family life with grandkids, great grandchildren and an abundance of family members and friends.
Throughout his life, John was an active athlete and served as a coach to many young men, but he excelled in golf in his retirement stage and was playing the game until he was 83 years old.
John H. Ward, Jr. is survived by his wife Mary Ward, his sisters – Sarah Williams, Justine McCrorey, Jean Bertrand (& Vincent); his brother – James Ward (& Dolores); his children – Atiba (& Tiffany), Donna (& Jesse) and Gregory; his grandchildren - Keisha, Keenan, Philip, Colette (Jesse), John, Jacob; and his great grandchildren – Quatez, DeSean and Nyla.
A memorial service to celebrate the life of John H. Ward, Jr. will be held at a later date in Miami, Florida. Details will be updated on this page as they become available.
