On Saturday, February 10, 2007 Joseph (Sonny) F. Ramos went to his eternal rest. He was born in New Bedford, Massachusetts on April19, 1939 to Macario Ramos and Rosa Fermino from Santo Antao and Sao Vicente Cape Verde respectively.
A dedicated U.S. Army Soldier and Vietnam Veteran Joseph served with distinction earning the Bronze Star and Purple Heart during his tour of Vietnam. Although wounded in Vietnam Joseph went on to recover and become a graduate of Bristol Community College with an associated degree and furthered his education at Southeastern Massachusetts University at Dartmouth earning his Bachelor Degree in Business Administration in 1979. Soon after his graduation he obtained employment working for the United States Navy in Newport Rhode Island working as a transportation specialist for several years before transferring to the Coast Guard offices in Boston Massachusetts. In 1987 he transferred to Orlando, Florida working at the Supply Division for the Naval Station. In 1992 he accepted a transfer to Guantanamo Bay Cuba where he worked for the Supply Office until 1994. Following his tour in Cuba, Joseph returned back to Orlando to continue his government service back for the supply department before retiring.
Joseph had a passion for spending time with his family leaving many fond memories with: his loving and devoted wife Marlene A. (Araujo) Ramos of forty-six years; his loving children Jolene Suttles of Orlando, FL., Joseph F. Ramos Jr. of Wichita Falls, TX., Joella Henry and Jason Ramos both of Orlando, FL. He was the brother of the late Abel Ramos, Emily Pina, and Michael Ramos, his surviving siblings are Wilson Ramos of Providence, RI and Albertina Silva of New Bedford MA, and Albert Ramos of Acushnet, MA. He was the proud grandfather of nine and the great grandfather of one.
Known as a quiet man Joseph, will forever be remembered for his compassion for life combined with strength and courage will always be loved dearly and will be greatly missed. May you rest in peace in the Eternal Heavens Above.
Funeral services will be conducted at 10:00 AM on Thursday, Feb. 15, 2007 in the chapel of Newcomer Family Funeral Home, 895 S. Goldenrod Road. Interment with Military Honors will follow at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, FL. Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 6:00-8:00 PM.
