SHAUGHNESSY, Joseph James April 10, 1944 – October 29, 2015

Joseph (Joe) James Shaughnessy of Longwood, Florida passed away unexpectedly on October 29, 2015. He was 71 years young. Joseph was born April 10, 1944, in Cumberland, Maryland to Ruth Justine Short and Joseph Francis Shaughnessy. Joe was the oldest of 4 children and grew up in Pittsburgh, PA. He stayed in Pittsburgh to attend Carnegie Mellon University, earning a degree in Civil Engineering. Joe was also member of the United States Marine Corps and bravely served in the Vietnam War.

After returning to Pittsburgh, Joe met Gail Barefoot, a Registered Nurse from Pleasantville, PA and they were married on June 8, 1974.
Joe went on to receive a Masters of Science in Construction Management the University of Missouri.

Joe worked for Reynolds Smith, and Hills Construction Services for 29 years. He retired 2 years prior to his death and begin a new career as full-time Grandpa. He and Gail spent a good bit of their free time traveling to the homes of their grandchildren or hosting everyone at their place in Longwood, FL. His nine Grandchildren will miss sitting on his lap, the "Best Seat in the House"
Joe is survived by his loving wife, Gail Barefoot Shaughnessy of Longwood, FL; Parents, father-in-law H. Fred Barefoot and mother-in-law Alma Barefoot, of Sebring, FL; son Joseph (Sean) Shaughnessy and his wife Melissa and children Ethan and Ava of Belle Isle, Florida; daughter Amy Johanek and her husband, Charles Johanek, and children Kate and Ryan of Arlington, VA.; son Joel Shaughnessy, his wife Anna White (who is expecting their first child, a boy inJanuary 2016) of Brooklyn, NY; daughter Gretchen Arnoczy, her husband Aubrey Arnozcy, and their children Abigail, Emily, and Bruce of Whispering Pines, NC; daughter Jennifer Geis, her husband Eric Geis, and their girls Lacey and Bexley, of Prairie Village, KS.

Joe is also survived by his 3 younger sisters, Sherrie Robinson and Colleen McKenna of Pittsburgh, PA; and Michelle Gerideau of Lancaster, PA.
A memorial service was held for Joe on November 2, 2015 at Sanlando United Methodist Church, where Joe was an active member for 26 years. He served as president of the Fellowship Sunday School class, and in recent years a volunteer at Camp Pioneer.

His grinning face, smiling eyes, and many famous sayings ("Joe-isms") will be remembered forever by his friends and family.
