SHAKES, JOYCE IRENE- Of Winter Park passed away Tuesday, May 22, 2007. She is the daughter of the late John and Dorothy Gould who were residents of Wilder, Vermont. Joyce was born in Claremont, New Hampshire on October 13, 1932 and grew up in Wilder, Vermont. Joyce graduated from Hartford High School in White River Junction, Vermont. She continued her education at the Burbank Nursing School in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. It was while attending the Burbank School that she met Harry Shakes. Harry was stationed at Fort Devens, Massachusetts and would become her loving husband when they married in the post chapel on March 15, 1952. She is survived by Harry, her loving husband of fifty-five years, their two sons the Honorable David Shakes, District Judge of Colorado Springs, Colorado and Dale Shakes business owner of Winter Park; her sister Barbara Matta of Burlington, Vermont, David's wife Sandy and their three children Drew, Leigh and Lauren all of Colorado Springs, Colorado; and several nieces and nephews. Joyce and Harry moved to Winter Park in 1979. It was here where they became active members of the Aloma United Methodist Church in Winter Park. Joyce has always loved children. She taught Sunday school and was den mother to American children while living with her husband, Harry, in Germany, Japan and France. She was President of the Friendship Class and the Pathways Circle for several years at Aloma United Methodist Church. Joyce was employed at the Lake Highland Preparatory School working in the Lower School Media Center for fourteen years. Over the last ten years Joyce has been an independent business owner. All who knew her will miss Joyce. A Memorial Service will be held at Aloma United Methodist Church, 3045 Aloma Avenue, Winter Park, on Sunday, June 3, 2007 at 4:00 PM. Reception to follow in the Fellowship Hall. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Building Fund of Aloma United Methodist Church would be greatly appreciated.
