Julia "Juel" Margaret Jones (nee Ferro) died on January 6, 2009 and is now walking with Jesus after a long battle with illness. Juel was born in Philadelphia, PA in 1923. She was the youngest daughter of Joseph and Rosa Ferro. Juel, husband Frank and son Robert moved to Orlando in 1954 from Sharon Hill PA, a suburb of Philadelphia. They both loved the lifestyle of the smaller town that Orlando was in the 50's and they really liked the warmer weather. Juel and Frank lived in the Coytown area for over 54 years until they moved into an assisted living facility in 2006 due to failing health.
Juel became a Welcome Wagon Hostess in 1956 welcoming new residents to the Orlando area and giving them special gifts from the local merchants. She was a charter member of the "Friendship Club" of the Florida Association for Home and Community Education for over 51 years. Juel was a finalist in the 1955 Mrs. Florida Pageant but had to drop out due to a family death. Her family already considered her Mrs. Florida at that time. Juel loved to cook and was always entering cooking contests or sharing her delicacies with family and friends. She loved to garden and at one time had 22 different fruits and vegetables growing in her yard. Due to her diabetes, she enjoyed swimming and biking for her daily exercise until a few years ago when her illness forced her to stop.
Juel loved all animals and she always had a dog or cat at her home. The squirrels and birds would always eat in her garden, but she said "there is plenty for everyone." She loved her Lord and her family and attended weekly Mass until her failing health prevented her from attending. She was grateful for the Lay Ministers who brought her Communion at her home. Juel loved people and loved being a part of their lives. She will forever be remembered for her inner and outer beauty, her innate sweetness and her wonderful influence on her family and all those whose lives she touched.
The family requests that donations be made in her memory to the American Diabetes Association, 1701 N. Beauregard St. Alexandria, VA 22311 (giving@diabetes.org) or the the Alive in Christ, St. Margaret Mary Parish Campaign, 526 Park Avenue, Winter Park, FL 32789 (www.BeAliveinChrist.org).
She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Frank; son, Robert and his wife Peggy (Hall) Jones and by many nieces and nephews and treasured friends. She was preceded in death by her brother, Gus Ferro ('92); sisters, Anna B. McKeown ('68) and Molly Peranteau ('04).
Her wake will be in the Chapel of St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church at 9:00 AM on Tuesday, January 13, 2009 with Mass of Christian Burial following at 9:30 AM. Rite of Committal will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park, Gotha, FL.
