Khadim Hector Momain

June 5, 1944 — March 31, 2022

We are deeply saddened to announce that Khadim Hector Momain, age 77, of Orlando, Florida passed away on Thursday March 31st, 2022 in Orlando, FL.

Mr. Khadim was born on June 5th, 1944 in Lahore, Pakistan, son of the late Taj Thomas and Rasheeda Louisa (Suba) Momain. On October 11, 1968, he married the former Maria Sahotra.

Khadim, also my dad, preferred to be addressed as Hector which was his middle name. He spent his early years in the historic city of Lahore close to Lahore Hotel in the olde city. He received his early education from Don Bosco Missionary High School in Lahore. This is where his Christian Catholic beliefs were established. Dad was the eldest among his 10 siblings and felt the burden on his shoulders to support his parents as they were from a humble background. He studied hard and worked small jobs part time to support his family. After high school, he started working at Pearl Intercontinental Hotel in Lahore. This is where he got his big break and landed a job in Switzerland.

The family at that time did not have enough money to buy an airplane ticket and were contemplating on getting a loan to make his travel arrangements. But dad decided against that and told them he will travel by road. He bought different goods and merchandise that he would be able to sell in the neighboring country and hopped on a train. He would sell the merchandise and make a profit, and buy new things to sell at the other country. That is how he traveled to Europe. He would try to spend nights either in the train, or bus, or occasionally in a youth hostel or cheap motel to save money. During the day, he would either keep traveling or sell his merchandise. It took him 32 days to reach Switzerland. He traveled from Pakistan to Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Syria, Turkey, Austria, Germany and finally to Switzerland.

Dad was very ambitious, resilient, determined and very devoted to his family. He was trained by his company and stayed in Switzerland for 7 years. He kept supporting his family by sending them money all the while. The family back home were able to build a better home for themselves and got the other siblings married. After 7 years the company transferred him to Karachi, Pakistan and promoted him to Catering Manager for Swiss Air. There he stayed for 13 years.

Dad believed strongly about giving good education to the younger generation. He was often very passionate about kids doing good in school and focusing on their studies. Most of the kids in the family feared him because he would often start asking them if they know their times tables or how they were doing in school. But dad was very loving towards kids, his siblings and his grandkids, and also respected his parents a lot. Everyone who knew him would tell you that he was very personable and enjoyed everyone's company. He was able to hold conversations on any topic and would give you an impression that he knew a lot on the subject. He keenly read and listened to news to stay informed of all current affairs and had a lot of interest in politics as well.

In 1990 he came to USA seeking political asylum because of persecution of Christians in Pakistan. He always saw the U.S> as a safe haven for the Christian community and wanted to bring all his family to the U.S. He made a lot of efforts for the Christian Community, and served the Catholic Church as well. He, along with some of his dear friends like Mr. William Shehzad, Sister Agnes Gill, etc. established the Christian Association and was among the first to start the first Catholic Christian Church in Urdu language in New York. Due to his efforts for the community and the Pakistani Catholic Church, he was given the opportunity and the honor to receive communion from Pope John Paul II when he came to United States in the 90's.

While here, he helped his sister Nasreen in filing petitions for all his siblings and his own family as well. When the petitions matured he helped her in sponsoring all of them one by one, and helped each and every one along with their entire families in supporting them and getting them on their feet. He accomplished his lifelong dream of bringing his entire family to United States and to see them prosper. Today, all his siblings are settled in Philadelphia, PA.

He was always there when anyone needed him. He would be the first one to offer help. He always had a positive outlook on life and any hurdles and hindrances came as a challenge to him. He loved finding ways to overcome something and later enjoyed when he did overcome them. He was the loudest in the family and always made everyone laugh. He came a long way in his life but never forgot his roots and where he came from. He always treated others with respect and dignity and taught the same to the younger generation. He respected the law and always did everything through proper channels. He did not believe in achieving something through ulterior motives or by cheating someone. He was very straight forward, had a lot of integrity and was a man of his word. He will be dearly missed by one and all.

Mr. Khadim Hector Momain is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Maria Momain of Orlando; his son, Noel Momain and his wife, Mona, of Orlando; two daughters, Annaliese Momain of Philadelphia, PA, and Silvia Momain of Orlando; three grandchildren, Aaron Momain, Mckenzie Momain, and Sonia Mary Benjamin; two brothers, Arif Robert Momain and his wife, Martha, and Khalid Momain, both of Philadelphia; and six sisters, Kishwar Booret and her husband, Younas, Tahira Hans and her husband, Lazarus, Nasreen Waqar and her husband, Nadeem, Parveen Arif and her husband, Arif Soni, Shamim Emmanuel and her husband Emmanuel Masih, and Maria Magdalene Momain, all of Philadelphia, PA.
