Lawrence Y. "Mac" McAuley, Lt. Col. (Retired), USAF, 86, of Orlando, FL, passed away September 26, 2005. Born in Sanford, NC, on Februrary 13, 1919 to Annie Lilly McAuley and William Rey McAuley, he graduated from Sanford High School, attended N.C. State College and graduated from Kingman (AZ) Army Airfield's flight school. He was a flight instructor for several aircraft, including AT-6s to B-29s to C-124's, during WWII and flew the Berlin Airlift. He was a Command Pilot with the 3rd SSS (Strategic Support Squadron) at Barksdale, AFB. Mac transferred to Orlando's McCoy Air Force Base in the late 1950s as Command Pilot with the 2nd SSS on the C-124 Globemaster. During service for his country, he traveled the world and logged over 4800 hours of flight time. Mac was also employed by the US Postal Service and Great Western Meats. An avid golfer, he passed away playing the game he loved. He scored his second hole-in-one weeks after his 86th birthday. He was a Ham radio operator for over forty years; a member of the Masonic Lodge at Martin McClanahan Lodge #384, Shreveport, LA; a member of National Sojourners, Inc., Seminole Chapter #373; a past usher and long-time member of First Baptist Church of Orlando. He is survived by his wife, Dolores; sons L.Y. McAuley, Jr., Burbank, CA; William McAuley, Tavares, FL; and Patrick McAuley, Orlando, FL; step-daughter Deborah Meyer, Orlando, FL; step-son Jeffrey Raby, Orlando, FL; sisters, Elizabeth Dickens, Dallas, TX; and Hazel Freeman, Sanford, NC; granddaughters, Nicole McAuley, Stevenson Ranch, CA; Maggie Blaine, Winter Springs, FL; Laura Meyer, Danielle Meyer, Julie Meyer, and Rebecca Raby, Orlando, FL. A memorial service will be held Saturday, October 1, 2005, at 2:00PM at First Baptist Church of Orlando, with Pastor Ragan Vandegriff officiating. Interment will be at Buffalo Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Sanford, NC. Arrangements are under the direction of Newcomer Family Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the American Cancer Society or your favorite charity.
