Leona Mary Van Horn, 87, went home to her Heavenly Father on late Friday afternoon, September 15, 2017, at South Seminole Hospital following her battle with various illnesses.
She was the widow to Hubert Van Horn, her husband of 46 years, who went home in May 2008, and is survived by her son Patrick who adores her, daughter-in-law Debbie, and loving grandchildren Mariah and Josiah. Her other grandson Micah, who went home in October of 2015, was waiting and greeted her in Heaven.
Born in St. Louis Missouri and having one sibling, her sister Violet, she moved to the West Palm Beach area in the 1950's and married Hubert in 1962, who was a firefighter at the Town of Palm Beach for 28 years. She lived in Lake Park at the same home until moving to the Orlando area in 2009 where Patrick could care for her and she could enjoy her daughter-in-law and grandchildren. She worked in the restaurant and catering industry throughout her years in Florida and greatly enjoyed the many friends she worked with and customers she served. She had more energy and zeal for life than most people 20 years younger.
Leona loved to be outside, where she would enjoy the beach, tirelessly working in her yard that she took care of with great passion, or helping those in her neighborhood. She was an amazing wife and mother, and faithfully supported Patrick in his many activities, including scouts and 13 years of countless baseball games in two separate leagues. She prepared meals that were amazing, and loved to bless others by having them over for dinner. She was quick to sacrificially give to anyone who needed help or her time, including her Church family at St. John's Lutheran and the many neighbors who became great friends.
She will be laid to rest with her husband Hubert at the South Florida National Cemetery on Friday, September 22 at 10:45 AM (6501 SR 7, Lake Worth, FL 33449) and have a Celebration of Life service at her beloved Church, St. John's Lutheran, at 5:00 PM (241 Cypress Drive, Lake Park, FL 33403).
