Linda Arlene Howe, PhD, age 67 of Orlando, passed away Friday, May 13, 2016. She was born in Pittsburgh, PA on December 12, 1948 to Alfred Robert Somerhalder and Zella Jane (Lintner) Somerhalder.
Linda was currently an Associate Professor of Nursing at the University of Central Florida. She was an active member in local and national nursing professional organizations, Linda recently served on the National League for Nursing Board of Governors for two terms and as president-elect of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, Theta Epsilon Chapter. She was a member of the editorial board for Nursing Education Perspectives and reviewer for Journal of Nursing Education. She earned her Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina, M.S.N. from Texas Woman's University and B.S.N. from the University of Texas.
In October 2015, Linda was honored for her innovative teaching strategies and inducted as a fellow into the National League for Nursing's Academy of Nursing Education. In her 30-year academic career, Linda has served in various faculty and leadership roles at universities and colleges in Florida, Maryland and South Carolina. Prior to UCF, she spent 12 years at the School of Nursing at Clemson University. She began and spent most of her clinical career in intensive and critical care.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Zella Jane Somerhalder and a daughter, Elizabeth Marie Howe. She is survived by her father, Alfred Robert Somerhalder; her husband, John J. Howe; her son, Thomas P. Howe and his wife Annette; her brother, Alfred Robert Somerhalder Jr. and his wife Debbie; her sisters, Audrey Glassner and Ruthie Somerhalder; Grandson, Ryley P. Howe and Granddaughter, Hannah L. Howe.
Visitation will be held from 1PM-3PM, Saturday, May 21 at Newcomer Funeral Home, Orlando. Funeral services will begin at 3PM. Interment will take place at a later date in Brier Hill, PA.
A scholarship to support future NICU nurses, The Elizabeth Marie Howe Memorial Endowed Nursing Scholarship, was created in memory of her and husband John's daughter who passed away after only a few short days of life.
