Jonah Wilkes, and many friends and extended family members whose lives he touched.
Luis came to the United States at the age of 30 in pursuit of a better life for his family. Arriving with just $20 in his pocket and a heart full of ambition, he began his journey as a dishwasher at LaGuardia Airport. He often joked about his white uniform, saying, "It made me look like a doctor—until it was covered in tomato sauce by the end of the shift."
To support his family and create his legacy in the United States, Luis worked tirelessly, taking on several jobs over time including a position at Bulova Watches. When Bulova received a government contract and required U.S. citizenship from its employees, they helped Luis become a citizen, allowing him to continue his career there for the next 25 years.
A Heart for Family and Enterprise
In 1977, Luis married Julie Liriano, with whom he raised their daughter Juliet. Together, they built a home filled with warmth, laughter, and love.
Luis was a true entrepreneur. His ventures ranged from owning a pizzeria to exploring real estate, automobile parts, and even running a recycling plant. Each endeavor reflected his drive, resourcefulness, and bold spirit.
A Life of Joy, Laughter, and Legacy
Luis will be remembered as a man of tradition and deep work ethic, yet one who embraced the joys of life. He was a born storyteller and a charismatic jokester who could always bring laughter to the moment. Whether recounting his childhood in Colombia, work and experiences in New York or sharing tales from his many adventures, he had a unique gift for connection and humor.
He traveled widely throughout Europe, Asia, and the Americas, always embracing new cultures and experiences. In his quieter moments, he enjoyed watching golf and soccer and treasured every minute spent with his beloved grandson, Jonah.
A Faithful Departure
As a Catholic, Luis believed in the promise of Heaven, and we take comfort in knowing he has entered eternal peace. His legacy of resilience, love, and laughter will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
